First, and unrelated to the issue, I ordered one of the Dot Line Sensor Vu cleaning wands mentioned in another post, like the one that is seen in the Leica Assembly and Testing Video. It seems to be great, that's not the issue. But while I was using it, I learned that my m9 has a potential bug, and I was hoping that other owners could weigh in on this. I've taken video to send to Leica, but it is 6 mb and too big to post here. When in "sensor viewing" mode for cleaning, as I understand it (although there is barely a description in the manual), the shutter should remain open and power to the sensor is cut, allowing for dust removal with minimal electrostatic charge, etc. It should stay in the open position until the camera is turned off, ensuring that any cleaning device can be removed before the shutter is closed. My shutter closes at random, somewhere around 10-15 seconds. It tried to close against the Dot Line cleaning device and may have tweaked the shutter, I can't tell. After it closes, the display says "noise reduction..." as if it were in bulb mode, or after a long exposure. I believe this is a bug that makes the camera think that it is taking a photo. I can't believe that this would be normal--if it is, it should state in the manual that it closes after X seconds, but it clearly says "the shutter opens and remains open." I would be grateful if other owners can confirm that either my m9 has a problem, or that this is how Leica intended it, and all m9s behave this way. If you ran through the instructions correctly (and had a fully charged battery) the shutter would open and stay open (That's how the M8 cleaning cycle works.) c. doug_m Posted December 10, 2009 Share #5 Posted December 10, 2009 I had a similar problem when the battery was about 50%. I think the manual says you need at least a 60% charge. 80% should be good. I think there probably is a firmware bug and you should notify Leica as this could be a big deal. It seems like one should be able to clean the sensor safely or not at all. I was fortunate enough to be using a rocket blower for cleaning when I had my problem so no shutter damage occurred. I also wonder if some of us are too fixated on a perfectly clean sensor. I've attempted to notify Leica of the issue, and I have directed them to this thread. I would appreciate it very much if other users could report whether or not they are having this behavior. If it is a widespread phenomenon, I would strongly caution against cleaning your sensor with anything other than an air blower, as it is likely that your shutter will be damaged in the process. I just cycled mine with the battery at a reported 55%. I left it open for 2 minutes, then stopped it by switching off the camera. The shutter then closed normally. Zero problems. 250swb Posted December 23, 2009 Share #9 Posted December 23, 2009 I have just cleaned my sensor today (for the first time on the M9) and haven't had any problem. I note from the instructions that not only will a warning appear, but also a sustained beep if the battery capacity falls below a certain level, but I started with a full battery. If there is a bug, and people are not using a low battery or 'B' mode, then is it related to something else, like putting the camera on 'B' mode as well as using the sensor inspection menu?
