skimmel Posted December 3, 2006 Share #1 Posted December 3, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Several people have posted M8 examples and mentioned that the color is not quite there yet for them yet (even using IR filters). I have no experience working with profiles in C1 nor have I used the M8 so I am wondering: is this easily solvable? Is this something that requires a new profile? Will Phase One do this, and will they ultimately have a "with IR" and "without IR" profile? Or, is there something else that needs to be done to improve the color on images (beyond IR filters)? The reason I ask is that I am very interested in possibly purchasing an M8, but want to make sure that, soon, down the road, any (non-IR) color issues are solved (or maybe they are already!). Advertisement Posted December 3, 2006 Posted December 3, 2006 Hi skimmel, Take a look here Color profiles for M8 . I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Riley Posted December 3, 2006 Share #2 Posted December 3, 2006 the truth is the colour is probably never completely right for any camera in every situation even changing lenses can alter colour characteristics and the subject material matters too promotional stuff is generally more saturated where portraits somewhat less so, because this is usually more flattering Riley
jaapv Posted December 3, 2006 Share #3 Posted December 3, 2006 It is a matter of taste as well. I don't think the colours in the final print are an absolute.
skimmel Posted December 3, 2006 Author Share #4 Posted December 3, 2006 It is a matter of taste as well. I don't think the colours in the final print are an absolute. I agree with this and Riley's comment. I think that others have commented on skin tones/color with the M8 and I have seen a bunch of examples where I (subjectively) would agree that the skin tones are a bit off. sean_reid Posted December 3, 2006 Share #5 Posted December 3, 2006 Its common to have custom profiles made if a photographer is very demanding about color reproduction. It's not just the M8, it's all kinds of DSLRs as well, also the R-D1, etc. Cheers, Sean
ustein Posted December 3, 2006 Share #6 Posted December 3, 2006 >It's not just the M8, it's all kinds of DSLRs as well, also the R-D1, etc. Right. You hardly ever want the "right" color but pleasing colors instead (big difference). Unless you do reproduction work of course. Mostly skin tones are critical to be pleasing and hardly ever correct. Note: We often hear "camera A does not produce the right colors". You don't even know, because all you will ever see is the result from different raw processor (also the camera JPEGs are produced by an in camera raw processor). Also the generic profiles used in these RAW processors may not match your taste. One thing that we should expect with the M8 filters is a new C1 profile designed to work with them. But people will still have their own ideas about what consitutes "good color" and custom profiles will still be a good idea. Cheers, Sean
skimmel Posted December 3, 2006 Author Share #8 Posted December 3, 2006 Thanks Uwe and Sean. Do you guys currently have a profile that you like with your M8s? (I recall Sean mentioning something about needing to work on the color of some wedding photos -- have you settled on a profile that is working well for you?) (I have never tried to make a profile myself, nor do I think I am sophisticated enough to do this, so hoping to get a good one "off the shelf.") ustein Posted December 3, 2006 Share #9 Posted December 3, 2006 I actually use exclusively LightZone with the M8 and think it is quite nice. Has no special profile for the IR issue though. Uwe

I'm waiting to see what the color rendition will look like with Leica's filters. Until then, I'm using the stock profile or Jamie's latest.
