Chris,

I think that Ethernet printing on all printers seems to be "work in progress" on Macs. In the UK it will work perfectly for two weeks and then one or other of our Macs will lose its connection to the printer.

Couple of points to consider...

I use Airport express ethernet connection to all of my printers and vitually never have a problem...when I do it is not connection related. I have an Epson 3800 on the second floor of my house that I spool through Colorbyte IP 8.0 with Snow Leopard to the Airport Express. Maybe 10% slower than direct connect but very stable and had no problem waiting for Epson to update SL drivers.

Business prints on an HP LaserJet 2550 with similar connection is unbelievably fast.

The system is so good that a month ago I entered the house to find a blinking yellow alert light on the expresses...thought I had a problem but it turned out that Apple had released a firmware update and the system requested the OK to update all of the airport expresses. Two for printers and one to spool music to the stereo in another room. I assented to the request and it was done wirelessly without any input from me...sequentially all three devices were updated and then re-accessed by the router and stabilized back to green light OK condition. Made a believer out of me.

As an aside I am convinced that Colorbyte IP delivers consistent perfect BW prints with great control...they have very linear well derived profiles for almost any Epson printer and paper combination - be it Epson or third party. Very timely updates and usability is great.

I have been using it for 4 years from an Epson 2100 now 3800 and soon a 4880. The new -900 printers have great profiles from Epson but below those the IP ones are very desirable.

So .... airport express to printer and IP has been a transparent consistent connection that allows me to focus on the print not the process.

Bob,

My suspicion is that our cordless phones (there are 3 in the house), which also operate in the 2.4 gHz band, have something to do with our printing problems. I cannot get a 802.11N network to run in the house with any consistency. In the UK we are not yet permitted to run in the 5 gHz band, which might improve wireless. I have a rambling old house where most of the internal walls are one or two layers of brick. Unlike my house in France, I cannot get wireless streaming from an Express to work and my wife's Robert's WiFi only radio is intermittent. I have tried range extenders with no improvement. When I go to visit my daughter in Baltimore next summer, I am going to bring back an illegal in the UK, high power Cisco dual band wireless router. I am way out in the country, so it is not going to interfere with the military who currently own but do not use the 5 gHz band in the UK.
