Goombah6 Posted December 6, 2009 Share #1 Posted December 6, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I decided to head out and get some photos of the setting sun striking a nearby mountain range this afternoon. It was pretty cold...about zero (celsius). I had my m8 set up on a tripod for about 15 - 20 minutes. I captured maybe 20 photos over that period of time as the light began to change. Got home and tried to load the (DNG) photos using Irfanview. I was able to load 3 of them. The remaining images are not recognizable by the software for some reason, even though the camera does display the images on the LCD screen. So the images were captured, but somewhere part way through my shoot, the images are no longer in a recognizable form for the software. Nothing is wrong with my m8...i have since tested another card on an indoor shot, and it works fine. I'm wondering if anyone has had a similar experience. Did my card get trashed due to the cold? Here is the last shot I was able to retrieve and download to image software (attached). ---Dave
Advertisement Posted December 6, 2009 Posted December 6, 2009 Hi Goombah6, Take a look here "frozen" SD card?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Big T Posted December 6, 2009 Share #2 Posted December 6, 2009 I had a similar experience with Capture 1 once (on a Mac). Using CP1 to download the pics (DNGs) and they wouldn't transfer from the card in a card reader. Showed up on the M8.2 screen okay. And all pics taken in normal temperature (20-30C). So just did a drag and drop from the card in a card reader to a directory on the Mac and CP1 picked them up fine. No further issues. Only happened once. Card was a Sandisk SDHC Extreme III. Still use the card and it hasn't happened since.
Goombah6 Posted December 6, 2009 Author Share #3 Posted December 6, 2009 Funny, I was using a Sandisc also. I decided to reformat the card in my camera. Tried some new shots and it works fine now. Weird. ---Dave
Klickee Posted December 6, 2009 Share #4 Posted December 6, 2009 I get the same or similar problem. When I plug the usb cable into the computer and turn on my M8 and try to open the folder, the M8 will freeze up and not show any images. I then have to either shut off the M8 and turn it on and maybe the images will show up in the folder. If that does not work, I have to remove the battery from the M8 and turn it on again. I am using a Sandisk 2GB Ultra II memory card. This is an intermittant problem and it seems to occur less with Windows XP, but it occurs in Windows Vista more often. Better to use a card reader and not the usb cable. Safer.
Nicoleica Posted December 6, 2009 Share #6 Posted December 6, 2009 Hi Dave, Sorry to hear of your problem. Did you try viewing the files from the card on the Mac using other software ?(The standard Mac Preview for instance?) As you've reformatted the card now, we can't see if that can recognize your files directly off of the card, but it's worth a try if this happens again. It sounds as though you may have had some small data corruption on your card. Perhaps the voltage may have been a little low if your camera was very cold, or maybe even the card didn't like the cold? Any sort of write error has the possibility to cause problems like this. It sounds as though the damage wasn't too severe though, as the camera was still able to read them (Or at least the previews. Did you try zooming in on them in the camera?) Anyway, the good news is that, after reformatting the card all seems well now. Lovely picture too. farnz Posted December 6, 2009 Share #7 Posted December 6, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Even though you've formatted your SD card in your camera, Rescue Pro, which ships with many Sandisk cards, should be able to recover many of the images from your SD card as long as you haven't overwritten the entire card with new photos. pgk Posted December 6, 2009 Share #8 Posted December 6, 2009 Dave If your M8 can read the images (did you try 'zooming' in on them to check that it was actually reading the dngs?) then its not the camera nor the card. Most likely its a reader problem and in my experience these can be fickle - work fine then don't, allow partial dowloads then full, then none, may be OS related or a conflict or something. I'd suggest trying a card reader if at all possible. I have also had problems with card readers, ALL of which have been solved once I found a reader which was OK with my computer(s) - I've stuck with this and all issues have been resolved). There are many threads about downloading images and card readers here on the forum.
Goombah6 Posted December 6, 2009 Author Share #9 Posted December 6, 2009 I was trying to view the images using a card reader...one which I have not had any problems with (until now?). Unfortunately, I did not try zooming in on the images that were displayed in the camera. In hindsight, I was probably a bit hasty in reformatting my card.
