After shooting FF again after quite a number of years, I found to my surprise that my taste in focal length has shifted. It used to be that I went for 50 mm as anchor of my system, with 35 an 90 in the bag, the classic combination. Obviously the M8 changed my preferences to 21-24 , 35 and 50-75 as basic set because of the crop. Now that I have my format back, I still seem to use 24-35-50, just like on the M8. It gives rise to some interesting speculation about the cold numbers related to FOV as opposed to the character of the lenses. Anybody else with this experience?

Not quite, but interesting (to me at least) nonetheless. I shot film Ms for decades using primarily 28, 35, 50 and 75 (the latter infrequently). To my surprise, I use the same focal lengths, with about the same frequency, after I moved to the M8.2 this year. I might use the 28 to some greater extent, but not much. I think maybe I learned to move my feet differently.

 

But, that didn't stop me from spending money on lenses anyway :)...love the switch to 50 lux and 28 cron asphs. (The fondness for the 28 cron may account for my somewhat greater use of it in lieu of the 35 cron.)

Am I correct that you have a 24 lux Jaap? If so, that's one amazing lens and perhaps it is influencing your widest FL, and shifting the 3 lens set in that direction? My response to the M9 is more what you might expect. Th 24-28 and 35 got most use on the M8, while the 50 is my most used lens on the M9, the 28 is my widest lens getting much use, and the 35 gets a lot of action as well. best...Peter

I find my 28mm is getting less use now than it did on the M8, though the 35mm is getting more use than it did on film where the 50mm was my favorite. so Im shooting a bit wider now than on film, mixing 35 and 50 as the favorites.

It's so funny you would post this. I have been thinking almost exactly the same thing. I have to remind myself that my 50 Summilux is the "standard" lens, as I seem to have gotten used to the 35mm focal length as the standard lens. And now when I use the 35, I'm mildly pleased to find it's wider. It's very interesting: talk about focus shift: mine shifted because of the M8.

M experience with the M9 is exactly as Bo's. 28mm Summicron has become my least used lens while 35mm & 50 mm Summiluxes are the favorites.

I suppose the biggest change for me has been the 50. I very rarely used it on the M8 but it's coming out more and more with the M9.

 

The other thing that's happened is that the 28 (which was my lens cap on the M8) is still being used a lot - but now, IMO, I'm able to use it to it's full potential. Where before I was using the 21 Elmarit - and feeling frustrated some of the time - I'm now reveling in being able to use the 28 alongside a medium telephoto as a base kit for documentary work. The combination of the 28 cron asph on the M9 + the 85 1.2 L on the 5D2 is a marriage made in heaven for me. The M9 stays on it's strap diagonally across the body, the 5D2 is on one shoulder and I'm able to move very quickly from one of the best wides made to one of the best medium telephotos - with, for me, the advantages of accurate autofocus on the 85 - which can help at times. My 50mm has become pretty much perfect now. The others are getting equal treatment because I'm a one lens person and just take out whatever I haven't used in a while. This hasn't changed at all. One exception: I used to take the 2.8/28 ASPH for portability but have replaced it with a 2/35 ASPH. 35mm just seems the perfect street shooting FL...

50mm's are a little too long for me on the M8 and I'm using them more on the M9, especially the 50mm Summlux ASPH.

 

Below that focal length, there's a hole in Leica's offerings. I'd very much like to see a vice-free (or at least better behaved) 35mm Summilux and a faster 28mm. As the lower limit of what's supported by the camera finder, I'd also like a Summilux at that focal length.
