Yup you read it right, I am glad. Why? Because now I don't have to worry about almost being able to afford them and then talking myself into going that little bit further to make it happen. They have finally said goodbye to me...I did not what this to happen but I guess Leica really does not need me anymore and are off to bigger and greater things and have no use for me anymore. Of course I will still bottom feed, but me and Leica are finished directly. Kind of liberating...

It is due to the Pound-Euro exchange rate, and the 6% does include the 2.5% VAT increase. Even so it is unfortunate. I've only been a Leica customer for 2½ years and price increases it seems are the norm. But even in Canikon land prices have risen, particularly for the best lenses.

There's always the 2nd hand market.. getting suitable camera body from well recognized & authorized dealer and lenses from the same place or elsewhere..

Especially the lenses should be quite safe to purchase 2nd hand. With the body opt for one that comes with warranty or in case of M8 buy one that is working and send it to Solms for some 8.2 upgrade. The upgrade gives you instant 1 year full factory warranty at no extra cost.

So, the prices of new Leica stuff (and other) may be going up in the uk, but there are good alternatives around. Not to mention about visiting main land europe and buying one from there. You could always monitor the euro-pound ratio and make the exchange at a suitable rate for a later purchase..

Naturally this all mounts to more work & effort from you part, but if you want to use Leica equipment there are ways to get it done. Also for the lenses part, there are good options from the likes of Zeiss & Voigtländer to use with your M-body.

Sure the 3600 Summilux ASPH and 10,000 Noktilux 50 are out of financial reach for most but you can still get a used Summicron 50/35 and Elmarit 28 for under $1000. The key with Leica, IMO is Less is more. Pick two focal lengths that work for you and you are set. For me it's a 28mm and a 50mm for my M8, both used, both uncoded, both awesome and under $2000 for the both. They are orders of magnitude better than a 24-70mm f/2.8 zoom and basically do the same thing, plus they are so small I bring my M8 and at least one lens everywhere. I wouldn't give up on leica just yet...

The nikon 24-70 is 1800 and the Canon 24-70 is 1300. The elmarit 28mm is 800-1000 for EX+ on the used market and the 50 summicron is 600-850 on the used market.

IMO Buying nikon/canon makes you waste money or mid-range lenses that aren't that great at anything, at least with leica, you can shoot wide-open all day and night.

Daniel, couldn't agree more! My stable of lenses consists almost entirely of second hand Leica glass, and the not too extreme versions. Much as I'd love a summilux lens, I doubt if I could consistantly focus it when wide open any more. My summicrons and elmarits continue to delight me.

This is why I love my Summicron 50mm, which BTW was $750 shipped to me with original hood, UV/IR Filter, Leica Bubble and in absolute mint condition. New lens price hikes don't matter to me much.

FWIW the Nikon 50mm f/1.4 AFS is 450 dollars, the Leica used is 300 more and there is nothing to break like a focusing motor. Try shooting the nikon or canon wide open and see if you get bokeh like this: IMO worth the 300 extra dollars ;-)

It's not just Leica; prices are going up with just about all the manufacturers, and not just for cameras/lenses.

I've payed 250$ for this Summicron-C 40mm f:2 and I totally love it.

I know you can buy great Leica lenses by spending a small amount of money (an outstanding Elmar 50/2.8 collapsible may be found for less than 400$), lenses that allow you to take beautiful pictures.

Besides, I could spend years with the lenses I have without the need of buying expensive new ones. I'm very fine with my Leica gear.
