There !

Bought my Leica MP Anthracite for me ( well, birthday present to myself, hinted the wife but didnt work .) ) on July and it was gloriously spanking new on my photography shelf gathering dust - my M8 see's most of ( well all actually ) work.

The other day I though : its a shame this beautifull camera never been used ( bought it new ) , and one day I'm going to sell it because its fetching millions.

So to prevent that and to inflationate the market ( kudos to me ! ehehe ) , I loaded a coulpe of T MAX on them and put it today for processing.

Today I picked the M8 and unfortunatly my Summaron is stuck there.. so I though : heck, lets give the MP a few more scratches.

So going on a 5 day trip with just my MP and a few rolls of film... and to celebrate that, I went online and bought 10 rolls of Fomapan 100, 10 rolls of Velvia 50 ( Im a sucker for slide film ) and a couple of Delta 3200.

The M8 is going to gather dust for a while now :) I missed film, just needed an excuse !

That is what I did about 7 months ago. You might FEEL BAD for your M8 later because it might not see you for a longer period of time.... I still use my M8 to check lighting before I take finals with films and / or instant films so she is ok with me :)

Enjoy

Congratulations on using a great camera.

I, too, was going to buy an M9. Whilst waiting for stock to arrive at my dealer I thought I would try the feel of the M8 camera (same size as M9) against the M7 that was also on display. In short, I didn't want to put the M7 down: it felt so .... right. I didn't buy it - I bought an MP and I am sure that I made the right choice.

I like the idea of using the M8 to check exposer's/angles/bokkeh..00, than taking the "real" picture with film. No sense in upsetting the ghost in the machine and leave the M8 for dead. Im really getting curious/nervous to handle a M.P. I feel once I do, the lust for a M9 will be quashed all together. The funny part is for the price of the M.P you can get two mint M.P and 100 rolls of Tri-X . I wonder what will be worth more in 10 years.

Today I've been using my M8 and M6 together. It's been a bizarre experience: I keep trying to wind-on the M8 and I keep forgetting to wind-on the M6. Once or twice I've glanced at the back of the M6 too :)

I'm curious to see what pics come out of both but I am really enjoying film again. I've even been caught browsing the ads for other M bodies!

I first processed film 45 years ago and for many years it was a daily, if not hourly, essential part of my job.

In 2003 this job forced me to put aside my M6's and go digital. I left that career on the last day of last year after 33 years and now in retirement I can shoot what I want, with what I want, how I want. In June I invested in a pair of M8.2's and I have no regrets with that move. In fact my only regret is that these cameras weren't available in 2003.

But this personal redirection and freedom motivated me to restore my B&W darkroom and dust off my M6's, in fact I recently added a nice M4 with which to use my 21/3.4 SA. For me film, particularly B&W, is more alive and relevant than at any time in the last 15 - 20 years. About a month ago I purchased 9 x 100 feet of film (Tri-X, Pan-F and Rollei 25) and I am now carrying my film Leicas about twice as often as my digital Leicas.

Enjoy your MP, use it for its intended purpose which isn't to occupy space on a shelf or in a vault. You will likely find yourself becoming a better photographer shooting film without the forgiveness of post processing a RAW / DNG file. Likewise the limitations of carrying but 36 exposures in the camera and limits of numbers of rolls of film in the bag and the amount of film one desires to process as compared to having a single 4 gig card in a M8.2 and enjoying 375 RAW images before reloading will likely stimulate a discipline in one's shooting that demands an economy of images shot and taking the additional effort to get the image right the first time rather than relying on extensive bracketing or correction in post.

Dave;

When you posted the same story on 'Rangefinderforum' recently - the advice was simple:- "you have both, be happy using them both!" :)

Dave.

Interesting - right now my M8 is on a shelf, and my camera that is with me is - believe it or not - an Olympus Trip-35, to be replaced with a donated Olympus 35rc once I replace the light seals.

People may ask why; especially since the 50/1.4 and 28/2 purchased recently are just sitting...

1) I use computers all day; it is nice to use something tactile at other times;

2) I really like getting things right the first time; it is kind of a game, but a fun one. With digital it is too easy to chimp, and that takes the thinking and reasoning out of it.

3) I'm researching a film mount for my M-mount lenses; whether Leica or a CV Bessa (or...) if I like going back to film for some of my photography, I'll purchase an M-mount body.

4) I have not had much luck with my M8 and cold weather.

It is all fun; which is the goal of all of this, right?

JohnS.
