Pedro Posted December 4, 2009 Share #1 Posted December 4, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just bought a black paint MP. I feel the original strap will scratch-off the black paint. Questions: 1. Does anyone experienced this? 2. Does anyone - owning such camera - care about paint scratches? If no, do you let it scratch freely? 3. If you answered yes to the previous question what's the solution you have adopted? If you do not care about scratches and have a picture of your camera - please post. Thanks. peter_n Posted December 4, 2009 Share #3 Posted December 4, 2009 Yes they scuff up but it is normal and I don't worry about it. I don't have a picture but it isn't dramatic yet on mine anyway.
Pedro Posted December 4, 2009 Author Share #4 Posted December 4, 2009 Think there was a discussion here, round post 1362. Yes, Rob. Thanks for answering there including a picture of your camera. I think that the golden patina your camera is showing is really nice and doesn't hurt the esthetic of the camera... but probably decreases its value should you need to sell it at a later stage. I though my question was a bit off-topic for the "I love my MP" thread and decided to post here, on the more general Film Forum, hoping for information from more users. j. borger Posted December 4, 2009 Share #5 Posted December 4, 2009 I would invest in a Luigi Strap. These straps do not only look good, but also have leather protectors on the places where you are scratching of paint. Every Leica deserves a Luigi strap! http://www.leicatime.com/a000-STRAPS-page.htm
earleygallery Posted December 4, 2009 Share #6 Posted December 4, 2009 If it's going to give you a real 'brain pain' then a couple of strips of black tape could solve the problem!
Guest aurora_borealis Posted December 4, 2009 Share #7 Posted December 4, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) (...) I feel the original strap will scratch-off the black paint. (...) The black paint is supposed to come off. It is beautiful I think. The Luigi straps will wear off the black paint also.
thirdwheel Posted December 4, 2009 Share #8 Posted December 4, 2009 Just bought a black paint MP. I feel the original strap will scratch-off the black paint. Questions: 1. The MP scratches very easily. Even fabric - i.e. your clothes can land light scratches on your MP, so a strap will too. I just got a very light scratch on mine, which can only be seen at an angle, but it is ok for me.
jacksparrow Posted December 4, 2009 Share #9 Posted December 4, 2009 I use a half case, which protects much of the body paint, except the top and front. Probably would be the best option if you want to keep it pristine
earleygallery Posted December 4, 2009 Share #10 Posted December 4, 2009 Or just keep it in its box! It's like a new car, once you get that first ding from a supermarket car park you become a bit more relaxed and less precious about it.
redbaron Posted December 4, 2009 Share #11 Posted December 4, 2009 My latest car was only 1 week old when some clown reversed into it in a car park. 13 k worth of repairs! Was I pissed!

jacarape Posted December 9, 2009 Share #13 Posted December 9, 2009 Just bought a black paint MP. Thanks. The quick answers... 1-Yes, my leather strap ears have rubbed the paint off the camera. The best advice I heard to prevent that was electrical tape on the camera. I decided I'd rather worry about other things. Then I decided not to worry about them either. 2-I stopped caring. It was made to wear. I don't let it scratch freely, I let it wear as I use it. 3-My solution, more wear, more scratches=more film=joy. I carried it and a 35 Lux ASPH on the streets of Lagos, on the back of a motorcycle taxi (Okada) and I couldn't have been happier to get to where I was going covered in dust. I was pissed when a lab in NM lost a roll of exposed film. I can only ask not to post pictures of cameras with a nice patina, post nice pictures you took with the camera on your adventures. Attached is a photo from a day on the beach some 15 miles south of Lagos. Shot on 160VC with the 35 Lux. What a great day I had. The second is of 2 wonderful young gals, mother and daughter, good friends to me. Scratches don't matter. Welcome, dear visitor! Pedro Posted December 9, 2009 Author Share #14 Posted December 9, 2009 Thank you all for the input. In the mean time I stopped worrying about the camera and just drop it in my daily bag, without any case protection, to have it always with me. jacarape, nice pictures. I guess you could also made those even if you protect the camera with a case
Guest AgXlove Posted December 9, 2009 Share #15 Posted December 9, 2009 Think there was a discussion here, round post 1362. See post 1365 in the above thread. The Luigi straps are very nice but are somewhat costly. A much more cost effective solution is the Domke Gripper strap; these straps are on every camera I own. They are just about indestructible and you can get probably half a dozen of the basic (no disconnect hardware) straps for the price of one Luigi strap. batmobile Posted December 10, 2009 Share #16 Posted December 10, 2009 Just bought a black paint MP. I feel the original strap will scratch-off the black paint. Questions: 1. No. I let it scratch, but I take care to protect the RF windows and VF. The rest I dont abuse but it will scratch anyway as the paint is not that hard. If you want no scratches and the best long life look, chrome is the one. Black chrome fades to grey. BP just shows its history and thats part of the appeal to some. I got BP bec I did not want shiny chrome. BP also provides better grip.
