Do you really really really need to purchase a second M8????? How did you survive before this camera entered your life? It might be a good time to take a deep breath, relax, and then consider your options. Whatever you decide, good luck (knock on wood). I've had two Leicas repaired while still under warranty. Mine died a couple of times, but bottom plate and battery removal solved it (I could view pictures, but nothing else). I know you've had kind offers of loaners, etc, but Dave Elwell at Leica in NJ is really helpful. I wonder if there's a crazy boot sequence that no one knows about, like with a Mac (hold down protect and menu while turning on) or something. Or maybe try it tethered. This kind of problem reminds me of a computer, that's all. Also, Jean Bardaji at leicaboutique.com in Montreal has batteries. Later -- Jon (neuer benutzer and killer of threads). And not so long ago people were sending me hate mail saying I was the only one whose M8 would hang in this way ! Guest guy_mancuso Posted December 4, 2006 Share #43 Posted December 4, 2006 I was going to buy a second one anyway after things sorted out , my time frame just moved up and i got the sort of blessing from the little lady. at least i won't wake up to a knife at my throat. LOL Just kidding I have tried almost everything and yes the switch works . What really is the issue is it is not consistent. it does different things . Sometimes i can shoot and see the playbac but the LCD menu's won;'t work But the LCD does work . I get the warning no SD card and battery door off , so it is very strange. Obviously i need a backup given with what just happened in the middle of a shoot. There is money on the line and like the boy scouts saying one must always be prepared. Nature of the business. I am far from being mad though and yes i still love what i see from the M8 and that has not changed . This problem could happen to any camera just this one is so public right now that it looks bad. My reason for posting in the first place was to give a heads up. I believe that is the right thing to do since many folks trust my opinion on these matters and leica needs to know something is wrong. When you put the bottom plate on, the bump on the plate seems to depress the switch on the camera. Maybe Guy should check to make sure his bump isn't misaligned. If it were misaligned, that would be like trying to shoot with the camera bottom plate off, which the camera does not like. JC Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

marknorton Posted December 4, 2006 Share #50 Posted December 4, 2006 By my counting, the micorprocessor will need something like 32 bits of digital input - 32 lines which can be 0 or 1 which can tell it the status of the various controls. For example, the shutter speed dial has 33 positions which requires 6 bits of digital I/O to sense. The shutter release has 3 positions which requires 2 bits and so on. Add the push buttons, the switches for SD Card, baseplate, thumb wheel plus other information the micro is going to want to know like battery condition, power sense and frame selection lever sense and you get towards 32. Rather than have 32 dedicated I/O pins on the micro for this, it may well be the micro reads the data in serial format through an I/O expander - strobe the chip to capture the data and then clock it in on a 3 wire serial interface (Chip Select, Clock, Data). Sounds to me like the area is giving problems on Guy's camera. Could be a badly seated flex-print - you can get all kinds of weird results with intermittent grounds for example. Either way, needs to be fixed in Solms. In the meantime, if it goes away, it could just as easily recur. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

There is a circuit just fried or something. Even if I could get it working normal , i can't trust it. I will call NJ service center tomorrow and arrange for deportation back to Solms.
