yanidel Posted January 24, 2010 Share #41 Posted January 24, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Anyone know how much the repair is for an out of warranty M8? Just curious. Mine is being repaired for the shutter fault, shutter curtain breakage and hot pixel. Will cost me €400. It is ok though it seems that these are design problems by Leica and not the result of product aging or misuse from my part.
Advertisement Posted January 24, 2010 Posted January 24, 2010 Hi yanidel, Take a look here Used M8 shutter fault. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Olsen Posted January 24, 2010 Share #42 Posted January 24, 2010 I have solved all shutter related messages-problem by manipulating the battery. As Alexander is indicating. It has made the camera up and going again. Regarding shutters: I got a long e-mail from Alpa, recently. They warned that photographers should be aware that the number of shutter actuations have increased drastically (ten fold!) after digital cameras was introduced, compared to the film days. If you plan to have your digital camera for a long time; you have to budget a new shutter every now and then.
trs Posted February 20, 2010 Share #43 Posted February 20, 2010 Joining the club. It happened to me last week and no luck so far to get rid of it. It could not have happened in any worse time. Was attending familly wedding, in Japan. Middle of the celebration, it happened to go. It so happened that the dial moved to C. I always have it in descrete mode. It stopped clicking, I look at it and saw the dreaded `shutter fault` message. After the wedding, we had short trip to Hokkaido, beautiful sccenary, frozen lakes, white mountains, glaciers, great weather. But, no camera. Basically M8 ruined the trip. M8 needs to take trip to NJ when I get home. I was always careful about not putting it in C mode, but there is always chance. I am not hardware person, but this could be avoided if we turned off either C or descrete mode when descrete mode is on in C mode.
jbgeach Posted February 20, 2010 Author Share #44 Posted February 20, 2010 I had my problem in discreet mode. Now that I have had it fixed by Leica and it has a one year warranty, I should probably just leave it in discreet mode and C, but I haven't. Those are features I can definitely live without
jaapv Posted February 20, 2010 Share #45 Posted February 20, 2010 A bit surprised at TRS post. I would not dream of going to something like that without some kind of backup.
Steve Ash Posted February 20, 2010 Share #46 Posted February 20, 2010 I would expect that no problems occur if I have sufficient spare batteries and sd cards. Regards STeve A bit surprised at TRS post. I would not dream of going to something like that without some kind of backup.

menos I M6 Posted February 21, 2010 Share #48 Posted February 21, 2010 Joining the club. It happened to me last week and no luck so far to get rid of it. It could not have happened in any worse time. I am more of the suspicious kind and would rather have another body sitting next to me, when attending such a event. You can consider a Leica film body (preferably a mechanical one with internal meter for convenience - M6 or MP), to come along on such a trip with a few rolls of film. Even if you don't use it as a backup, it can be a very enjoyable change of pace, to use along a digital camera. I am the kind, who recently always had a D3 + one or two zooms with me AND a small camera as a backup (a Ricoh GRD is a great little camera exactly for that purpose). This was always in my day bag. I recently switched over to RF cameras and enjoy the occasional trip with just one body and 2 lenses though. When I run out of cameras though, it reminds me of the times, I just enjoyed the moment without feeling to have to photograph.
jbgeach Posted February 21, 2010 Author Share #49 Posted February 21, 2010 Menos, I agree, sometime I purposefully leave my camera at home and just enjoy life without the photographic memories. We all have to take a break from time to time. However, I do always have my iphone with me.
trs Posted February 25, 2010 Share #50 Posted February 25, 2010 Back home now and geting over jet lag. I have not contacted NJ yet. I tried few of the tricks mentioned, but still no luck. One should learn from experience, but it was tough to cough enough money for M8 backup. I do have MP on my wishlist, but it never seems to show up below US$3K now. I had similar experience early in days while I was visiting Nepal. I was out on village. A calve knocked down camera from my tripod and could not get another camera until I got back to Kathmandu. Since then I always had multiple body for my SLRs. Since going M8, I have not touched my SLR or dSLRs. Just too bulky especially for traveling in comparision to M system. Having said that my wife did have her camera, an old dSLR and her GRD (original). So, I did borrow one she was not using. I learned that I totally lost appetite for dSLRs. But, it's like working totally new system. But, I do have some snaps. Thank you for all replies and ideas. Anyway, I guess I will dust of some of my old film cameras until M8 is fixed. In the mean time, this incident is helping to look for an MP more seriously for backup. Why MP? Mostly nostalgic reason other than backup. I just liked the idea that I can still run the camera if I did not have battery and I still have option to use battery and in camera meter.
jbgeach Posted February 28, 2010 Author Share #51 Posted February 28, 2010 TRS - you have the same options with m6 and you save $2000
trs Posted February 28, 2010 Share #52 Posted February 28, 2010 Hmm, I did not know that M6 had the same option as MP. Time to do search now for M6. I have seen some nice codition M6. M8 being my first M, don't really know film M very much. All my film camera have been SLRs. Thanks for the suggestion.
