horea Posted November 24, 2009 Share #1 Posted November 24, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Good afternoon everyone, I am so excited to be getting my new to me M8 tomorrow that I keep checking the UPS tracking site every other minute almost. Anyway, the reason for my post: while I have bought this from B&H's Used Dept. what are some tests you recommend I run on the camera as soon as I get it to make sure (as much as one can be sure) that it doesn't have the problems that seem to affect so many M8 owners? A few bullet points would be much appreciated and thank you very very much for all the valuable information in this forum. Happy Thanksgiving everyone! soboyle Posted November 24, 2009 Share #2 Posted November 24, 2009 Congrats on the M8. I to am beginning the search for a used M8 myself. I wonder how you settled on B&H for your camera, was it price (did they bagain at all?), or their reputation? I see they have a 15 day return period, a nice bit of security for used gear, just in case. I look forward to your impressions of the new body. Gerard Posted November 24, 2009 Share #3 Posted November 24, 2009 to make sure (as much as one can be sure) that it doesn't have the problems that seem to affect so many M8 owners? Whack the lens on. Take pictures. Smile. Learn. Take more. Learn more. Wonder why you ever posted this thread.
Nicoleica Posted November 24, 2009 Share #4 Posted November 24, 2009 First of all, congratulations, and I wish you many happy years with your M8. As far as problems go, I hope that you won't have any. Most of the early cameras that had problems will have been fixed by now, so hopefully you should be OK on that front. I would look for obvious things like banding, glowing blobs and lines. These should be pretty obvious though, and should have been fixed already. Also, have a look at the shutter curtains for any signs of marking or damage. (Again though, this should have been spotted already.) Check for the 'coffee ring' on the LCD, and any other obvious signs of damage or abuse. Do check that you have the latest firmware, and install it if needed. Charge up your battery, (While that's happening you have a great opportunity to study the manual. ), and then start to enjoy making photographs with your lovely camera. sfokevin Posted November 25, 2009 Share #6 Posted November 25, 2009 Hello Horea - and welcome... Nicole has given a good checklist already... And B&H is a wonderful and reputable online store... I have bought many used items from them and all have exceeded my expectations... You do not mention which lens you will have?... I would suggest that the first lens be a Leica lens that is a coded lens and get a UV/IR Filter for it... This will give you a standard lens setup that reduced the IR issues - My first lens was a Elmarit 28 - And it is still my favorite! With lens two you can venture into deeper waters... Again welcome and we look forward to hearing more from you!
horea Posted November 25, 2009 Author Share #7 Posted November 25, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thank you so much for all the answers! I will definitely check for problems just so I can sleep better at night. The lens I got: Leica 28mm f/2.8 Elmarit also from B&H and this one is brand new. As to why I chose B&H for my used Leica: - personal experience, I have bought from them a bunch of other stuff and every transaction met or exceeded my expectations - on price you could definitely do better on eBay although not a whole lot better. For peace of mind, 15 day return/exchange (which now is extended because of the holiday return policy the 15 day count only starts on January 3rd) and the B&H reputation I figured spending a few extra bucks is worth it. Thanks again, have a good evening everyone.
