Also, if I have got this right, the camera forgets and erases its manual distance setting every time it does automatically go on standby. So you have to invent it anew every time you touch the release. How convenient ...

This for me is the camera's biggest flaw - not a deal breaker, but it is going to be a major nuisance. Also there is no setting to keep the camera awake all the time.

Again I find this most interesting.

 

The X1 has a superb Elmarit lens and extraordinary file output but speedwise, it seems to work best using zone focusing at f/8.

 

There are two issues with that.

 

One, that requires a lot of light. Normally not so much a problem on sunny days (the sunny 8 rule comes to mind) But doing low light work even at high ISO is another matter. Then you'd have to rely on the AF which is a tad slower than a D-lux 4/LX-3 from what I can tell--which is not awful but not lightning fast like a DSLR or the Lumix contrast AF. And hampered in low light.

 

Second, according to Sean Reid, even after firmware 1.0 the scale has not been improved (distances after 2m are still quite vague). And the problematic issue of the distance having to be reset after a pause is still there.

 

Again, if your needs don't require super lightning fast AF and you can lock and wait for the decisive moment, it appears the X1 will do nicely. On sunny and bright over cast days with zone focus you'll also be served well and have the speed you want (just don't let the camera have sleep apnea when a critical moment comes up).
