Help Needed

Hello to everyone,

This is my first post. I have my name down for a M9 due the end of this month (hopefully).

With this in mind I have just purchased a second hand 35mm Summicron Asph and was wondering if anyone in the Manchester (UK) area ( I am in the Stalybridge Ashton area) would be willing to test the lens for me preferably on a M9. I can provide a card to drop the files on, or bring a portable hard drive to download to. (it's worth a pint)

Thanks in anticipation

Shen

Welcome to the forum :) I'm sure one of our British friends will comply. On the other hand, the proof will be on your own camera. You need not worry too much, it is very rare for a Summicron 35 asph to have any kind of problem. The only thing is that it is prone to get a stuck focussing ring when dropped, but you do not need a camerabody to test that.

Can't help either, sadly (I'm a long way from Manchester), but as has been said I'm sure the lens will be fine unless it looks - and feels - like a beater!

I've got to take my M9 back to Red Dot tomorrow as it's front focusing with pretty much all the lenses I've tested using my Lens Align kit. I'd been despairing about my 75 Summicron as it never seemed to give a sharp result. That's definitely the worst offender, so will be going in with the camera and the 75 Summilux. Moving forward a little so focus was just behind the rig definitely improved matters with all the optics.

Hopefully Solms won't be too overloaded, otherwise it's likely I won't see it again until 2010. :(

Thanks for the swift reply and welcoming Jaap, I used M3's and a M4p in the sixties and seventies until I had them stolen, then went back to Nikon instead of replacing them. I am really looking forward to the M9, I had a 50mm Summicron back then that served me well. I guess with using non Leica lenses for so long you get into a habit of testing a lens before you buy. My 35 is the chrome version and smooth to focus, the number is 380xxxx and was told it is about 15 year old and and while I do agree with your comments I think its peace of mind really that makes me want to test it (little used - grease hardening etc) thanks again for your reply.

My 35mm Summicron is a v.4 from 1983, and it is silky smooth, and very sharp indeed on my M9. Stop worrying until something happens to make you do it.

Thanks lars, I admire everyones confidence, just need it to rub off a bit more to get rid of that "buying a used Rolls Royce without a test drive feeling"

Shen,

Without M9 you can already see if your optics is undamaged or not.

I can't help you (unless it's worth a plane ticket!) but you made a great choice. My 35 'cron ASPH has quickly become my favorite M9 lens.

Hi Shen,

Welcome to the forum.

I agree 100% with Noah, great lens which stays 90% of the time on my M9.

You'll enjoy it for sure.

All the best,

Jean-Luc
