B&H Photo M9 availability changes?

I got the same email. I'm on the notification list at B&H, and my local dealer. It's very clear that no one knows when they will get any product. I also know Leica is losing sales because of this.

B&H doesn't send the notifications without an expectation of product delivery. They've told me a delivery of product is expected within 2 weeks. So, how do you know this is costing Leica sales? I can understand losing sales because of economic factors, or M9 operational issues. I've seen similar delivery problems with Nikon and Canon.

Pardon me but how do you know Leica is losing sales? Only if total demand for M9 is affected would they be losing sales. It is more likely simply a timing problem -- some of the money Leica gets will be delayed because deliveries have been delayed. But unless you know of cancellations that are not offset by new orders, there is no way accurately to say that Leica is losing sales. Are you saying the demand curve has changed? If so, upon what data is that based? The lost sales you speak of may be phantom sales --- people who were on more than one list will take themselves off when they finally get a M9 delivered. By no means does that mean that actual demand decreased.

 

Lost customer goodwill for hinting that supplies would permit deliveries soon after announcement is another matter.

This item is currently not in stock. We are accepting orders and it will be shipped when in stock. Orders will be filled in the order they are received. Your card will be charged upon placing the order.

 

This is not a new policy on their part which is why I never order anything from them unless they say it is in stock. Amazon, for example, does not bill your credit card until they ship.

It is indeed very clear. It's the «will be shipped when in stock» part that I find worrisome. :rolleyes:

 

You are right not to pre-order with B&H if you find it worrisome. More people should be cautious when making purchases on the internet. However, in this case I'm not worried since I can always cancel the order if there is a delivery delay that I find excessive--B&H has always been a stand-up company in all my dealings with them.

Maybe the new thread titled «Bitched like hell» will modify a bit our evaluation of B&H :rolleyes: I've also always been confident with B&H. Now... i'm beginning to wonder. I sense some irrational craze about this M9 thing which I just don't understand.

Any time a new product is launched and the manufacturer can't meet initial delivery requirements, some sales are lost. This is because people sit around and think, "Should I really be spending so much money on XYZ?" It happens to some degree.

How often are Canon or Nikon able to supply the demand their new pro bodies generate? I've waited for every Nikon I've bought. Many think their supply issues is a ploy to increase demand. I've always thought those "Should I..." types are not strong buyers and generally just clog up waiting lists.

I didn't know that. So, this a very new policy from B&H. Not long ago, they said the exact opposite, «We don't charge until we're ready to ship.»

 

You are mistaken. I've been at B&H for 15 years. Throughout it has always been our practice to require payment in full (excepting COD orders) when the order is placed. This is not a new policy and we make every possible effort to make sure customers are aware of this before an order is finalized.

Sorry, but this not true for «out of stock» items. A few years ago I ordered an item, which later proved to be «out of stock.» I was duly informed of the fact by B&H, who added that I wouldn' be charged until the item become available. So, not only was I not asked to pay in full, I wasn't even asked to make a deposit, and I was also informed that I wouldn't have to pay anything until the item be ready to ship.
