B&H Photo M9 availability changes?

No, they did not say they were shipping right away. I just noticed my credit card had been debited! And the order is only two days old, after I got an e mail from BH saying they were now accepting orders. Is this weird or what? I will call them as soon as I can get through. Looks like tomorrow, given that it's Shabbat.

B&H will charge you for a pre-order and they say so on their site when you place the pre-order. They only accept pre-orders when they know stock is on its way. This is why for most items, when they are out of stock will say "back ordered" or "out of stock".

Anytime I have placed an order when they say "accepting orders" they usually have shipped it within a week or so.

Please, guys, keep us posted when B&H sends the M9. I even wonder if this is legal. I mean, paying the full amount is akin to buying, right? And when I buy an item, isn't it required that the item be delivered to me right away? Or within a few days, if buying on-line? Even when buying on an auction site, once the transaction is completed and payment is received, the seller will tell you exactly when the item wil be shipped. And they will tell you again when the item has been shipped. Even for a $50 item. But here, for a $7,000 item, B&H can't even say?

They don't say «out of stock» for the M9, they say «notify when in stock.» I don't see much difference. One thing for sure, you won't see me pay for a $7,000 item when it is labeled «notify when in stock.»

Hi Elmo,

I do not think so. I got the same thing, but did not reply.

I think that they are just trying to firm up their orders. SInce there have been a lot of people that have placed multiple orders with different vendors they just want to get the serious ones only by having you place an actual order.

I stopped using B&H for most things because it's so big and doesn't provide personal attention, but they're definitely a reputable dealer. It was a guy behind the Leica counter at B&H who told me that there is no way they'd ever make a full-frame Leica M. And he told me that six months ago:eek:

I did use B&H for a long time, and I have noticed that some out-of-stock items allow you to order, pay in full and wait for the item while others don't, and instead have the 'notify when in stock' link. There are also 'special order' items, which you also have to pay in full at the time of order, which as far as I know is perfectly legal. But with those items they at least tell you an estimated shipping date.

It seems like they're expecting a shipment, or maybe they're expecting more availability in general in the near future. B&H is certainly trustworthy if I paid in advance for an item I would not lose sleep over it.

Having said that, I've decided that the personal service provided by smaller dealers makes them better to work with in the long run. Especially since the prices on Leica gear are the same anyway.

There's no question it's "legal," provided they don't make any misrepresentations about when they expect to receive the goods. Here, they've made clear that they're charging the credit card as soon as you place the order, and they have not given any indication when they expect to recieve and ship the goods. If you're OK with those terms, then you have a deal. The advantage for the consumer is that, if you're willing to pay the interest carrying charge on your credit card, then you get to move to the front of the B&H line for M9s.

In my experience, it has been B&H's practice for some time now on special orders and back orders to charge the credit card at the time the order is placed. They're a reputable dealer, and you can be confident it'll ship as soon as they have it.

This confirms what I think, even mighty B&H, THE biggest Leica dealer in the world, according to some, is getting nervous with this M9 mess.

This forum is nutty. I've never seen so many crazy assumptions as to what large corporations are thinking or why they do business the way they do.

I paid for the camera and know it will be sent out once it arrives. I'm not a weak buyer, which can populate waiting lists. Not sure why people are upset about B&H's process, since you don't have to participate. I know many store that have a waiting list and won't tell were you are located on the list or even how long it is. That is much worse than what B&H is doing. Imagine being able to get the camera at B&H in 2 weeks or waiting maybe until late December or January at another store. Give me the bird in hand.

B&H is great/ I waited till October to order my M9, called them over the phone & paid for it, got the camera 3 weeks later. Straight forward company. I would rather pay for large items up front as that removes the usual line campers from the mix.

James is right - 'Not sure why people are upset about B&H's process, since you don't have to participate.'

They know exactly what they're doing, & you should too (I posted it above). Payment in full or a deposit gets you on a 'short list.' Just call 'em & put some $ on the line. I paid on 11/09, they shipped on 11/20.

No more 'conspiracy theories,' please!

Done this with them before. The pre-wait list, no money changes hand. Then the order has to be paid for and in a few days, voila, it is shipped. I have no idea if this is the case, but I paid for gray within 35 minutes of the email. We shall see how long it takes.

I have never been disappointed in their service.

I don't really see what the problem is. Will anybody complain if their M9 arrives 1 week after placing their order after being charged in advance? I see many more complaints on this forum about M9's not being available fast enough.

I placed my order with B&H about an hour after they posted their notice. If I was charged,— fine. As long as my camera arrives within a about a week of placing the order. What would really upset me though is if I had to wait much longer than that, but then I always have the option of canceling my order. On the other hand, I also have had an order with Calumet for the past two months and that did not cost me anything. Whenever I phone them to inquire about delivery, I end up speaking to somebody who knows nothing. It's one or the other but I would put my money on B&H—even if I have to cough up the money in advance.

I've placed my order yesterday and my order status is "on backorder". I think they still don't have enough before accepting pre-orders.

Is the M9 actually "in stock", meaning at their warehouse? No, it is not. It's backordered. Why would your order status be anything different?
