cknobel Posted November 19, 2009 Share #1 Posted November 19, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi folks, I am travelling with my new M9 and made some shots in the Keys; nice sunset pics. The problem I have experienced is that when I want to view the shots on the display, they are not sharp, kind of hazy. When I zoom them in by turning the wheel, it takes a few secs and then they turn sharp. When I zoom out again to their original size, they appear hazy again. Any thoughts from your side? Advertisement Posted November 19, 2009 Posted November 19, 2009 Hi cknobel, Take a look here shots unclear in display.... I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
moikle Posted November 19, 2009 Share #2 Posted November 19, 2009 I think that is par for the course. I find it difficult to judge sharpness even when zoomed. Mike
dpattinson Posted November 19, 2009 Share #3 Posted November 19, 2009 I wonder if choosing a higher level of sharpening in the jpeg menu would make any difference to the embedded jpeg.

When you zoom in on an image it takes the camera a while to render the image. In the meantime it looks pixelated. It is annoying but normal for the M9 as far as I know. Hopefully the slow previews and zooms will be updated in a future FW release. Once you're zoomed in, especially at high-iso, the previews still don't look quite right. They look very noisy. But they should be sharp (unless the photo isn't). When I first tried an M9 and looked at the photos on the LCD I thought the camera was junk, since the previews looked so noisy. But when I saw them on my computer monitor they looked great. I don't mind the noisy previews, I use the LCD to check the histogram and occasionally to check focus. I don't want to waste too much processing power making the LCD image perfect.
jaapv Posted November 19, 2009 Share #5 Posted November 19, 2009 Not just noisy; they are less sharp than the M8 too at max zoom.
blatent liar Posted November 20, 2009 Share #6 Posted November 20, 2009 CK I know your pain. Is this your first M Digital? I gave into it, and started using the force. I taped a Box tab from some expired Tech-Pan 50 to my screen... as the preview is simply not good. Doubles as a screen protector. ISO rests where it's at. Hmmm... let's see here -- I taped some cardboard to my LCD, covered my logos with Black Tape, and may glue my 35 Lux ASPH to the body as it seems to be my favorite. (Saves on sensor swabs). It looks like I have created a status-less, weather-sealed, FF retro-digital, forsaking my M7. By not using preview, I harken back to my wet-darkroom. Now if they would only generate a GUI for Raw conversion, where we can pull the Neg from a metal Spool, and hang it to dry as it slowly reveals the image grabbing dust. Drat! Nostalgia can be expensive. Franken-camera. -Max

For the OP, as Jaap mentioned the preview on the M9 does seem slightly soft compared to what we've become accustomed to with the M8 (and pretty much all digital cameras). To the jpg sharpening point - this won't help if you are shooting raw only. Might work for JPG or mixed shooting though and perhaps worth a try. adan Posted November 20, 2009 Share #8 Posted November 20, 2009 It does seem that the M9 image review is nothing like as accurate as the M8's - much more contrasty (perhaps as a part of making the screen image more visible in sunlight) and less sharp, as noted. IMHO a mistake, since I'll bet a lot of the "M9 is not as sharp! M9 has less dynamic range!" comments come from people who have only seen images on the LCD at demos. It's a very bad reflection of the quality the camera actually produces.
blatent liar Posted November 20, 2009 Share #9 Posted November 20, 2009 Andy I'll second that. I had a professional friend grab my M9 the other day, and start shooting, he looked at the back -- zooming a bit, and sort of handed it back to me like a not so fresh baby diaper. I think his impression was "wow what a pricey piece of junk". Later, I showed him his snap-shot at 200%, and he almost went for the nearby bottle of Laphraoig. The camera grabs great light, but the screen betrays the capture. -Max

The screen is good enough to show me the histogram and if I blew the focus or not. However it's not good from a marketing standpoint. As I said when I was driving home from my first test of the M9, I was thinking the whole time how I'm so glad I just saved so much cash since the camera is horrible. Luckily I didn't delete the card but checked it out on my calibrated monitor at home, and of course I was duly impressed. I've noticed the zooms are sharper up until you get to the last setting (the highest zoom level). Is the camera actually zooming past 100%? The D700 does this and it drove me nuts. In any event, I'd rather have good photographs and bad previews than the other way around:D
