spersky Posted November 17, 2009 Share #1 Posted November 17, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Received my Grey M9 with 50mm 1.4 summilux and 28mm 2.0 summicron. This will likely be my last Leica camera that I ever buy. Bascially, the camera is a joy to use. The build quality is perfect. The images re-kindle the same excitement that I used to experience with my M7 film. I almost always shoot at fastest aperture and the Bokeh/Contrast is amazing. Now, I have 18Mp of FF camera which can print up to any size I will ever desire. For some reason, this camera system does improve my photography over my sold Canon gear. There has been no flaws with the camera. I repeat none. No aberations, no blobs, no dead lines, no IR purple, no lockups. Leica has made a customer for life. I cannot see any situation in the future that would require me to upgrade. It could be bad for Leica's long term financial situation since there will be so many customers who will never need a "better" camera. Well I guess they can always get my money on lenses. I know I paid Leica AG well for this camera, but I feel it is truly worth it. I think that the Leica team did a stellar job with this camera, and I salute them. Btw, I am no Leica fanboy, my opinion of the M8 was dismal. I judge based on the product and the results, not the name. There seems to be so much animosity towards this Leica M9 rollout. Do not believe it you might miss one of the greatest cameras you could ever have.

yanidel Posted November 17, 2009 Share #5 Posted November 17, 2009 I remember having the same kind of initial impressions when I was younger. But that was about girlfriends and usually the feeling was gone after a few days

Bo_Lorentzen Posted November 17, 2009 Share #8 Posted November 17, 2009 spersky..... cliffp Posted November 17, 2009 Share #10 Posted November 17, 2009 When I read the first part of the post I thought "Oh no, he hates it so much he won't buy another Leica camera". I have just bought an M7 and 3 lenses with a plan to get an M9 so didn't want to be put off. I am glad you are enjoying it. For the time being I will have to make do with vicarious pleasure through posts such as yours - keep them coming!

I am a relatively new Leica user; purchased every bit of my Leica gear, within the past ten months, and have similarly had absolutely no problems with any of it. michali Posted November 17, 2009 Share #13 Posted November 17, 2009 Congratulations! So pleased to hear from another ecstatic user. I've had my M9 now for 9 weeks, couldn't be happier with the camera. I just completed a 10 day safari in the Kalahari Desert with M9 & M8. Conditions don't get much rougher than this, both cameras performed flawlessly. I couldn't be bothered to explain this to the "anti-M9" crew. I also plan to get a second M9 body in the new year, the more I use my M9 with the M8 as a back up, the more I find the M8 has done its time with me, I still love my M8, however I feel it's the natural progression, in my case at least. Guest EarlBurrellPhoto Posted November 17, 2009 Share #14 Posted November 17, 2009 Btw, I am no Leica fanboy, my opinion of the M8 was dismal. I judge based on the product and the results, not the name. Well then, maybe you could point me (us) to some comparisons that show just how "dismal" the M8 is compared to the M9. So far I haven't seen any, nor have I heard anyone with any kind of creds as a photographer make such a statement.
bill Posted November 17, 2009 Share #15 Posted November 17, 2009 ...my opinion of the M8 was dismal. So far I haven't seen any, nor have I heard anyone with any kind of creds as a photographer make such a statement. Spersky expressed an opinion- one that I happen to share. The M8 was an evolutionary dead end. I have many times expressed why I would never buy one and that has not changed. The M9 on the other hand addresses most of the "no-go's" of the M8 which is why I shall have one. Your view of "creds" is interesting to say the least. I don't see any good reason for you to piss on a happy man, or a cheerful thread. Regards, Bill
spersky Posted November 17, 2009 Author Share #16 Posted November 17, 2009 Well then, maybe you could point me (us) to some comparisons that show just how "dismal" the M8 is compared to the M9. So far I haven't seen any, nor have I heard anyone with any kind of creds as a photographer make such a statement. No insult to Image Quality intended. Oh, I meant the fact that you cannot use your expensive lenses as intended (full frame). The IR filter issue which I hated. The numerous bugs that occurred at the roll out. I have seen some awesome pictures with the M8, so IQ is very good. Anyway, that dismal remarks is based on my opinion, and my perception that the M8 was a beta tester camera. I am sure you disagree and do not think the M8 is dismal, and I am happy that you love your M8. In hind site, I am glad Leica did make the M8. That makes the M9 so much better. I was likely too hard on Leica for the M8, but since I judge each product as they come out, I decided Leica was not for me. I really did not like it, but I wanted to go digital so I switched to Canon. However, the M9 is good enough to make me abandon 14k in Canon gear in order to get 19k in Leica gear. Now that speaks for itself. Regards, Steve
smoody Posted November 17, 2009 Share #17 Posted November 17, 2009 I never say 'never' because one never knows what's around the corner. I bought an M8 and returned it (but kept the lenses hoping that either an M9 or digital Zeiss Ikon would come to the rescue). I'm very satisfied with the M9 and the results I'm getting with it. When paired with a compact P&S that has zoom and fill flash (Canon S90 in my case), it covers just about every situation I might encounter. I would love to replace my Canon gear with a gently-used high pixel-count digital Medium Format system one day -- for those times when I want to go large. Having a significant increase in my clean pixel count would motivate me to use a non-M9 in certain situations.

Earl - this is the second time in two days you've made a post referencing -- not an exact quote -- "amateurs who don't know anything" and photographers who have "no creds." For all we know, you may be Sebastaio Salgado in disguise, but even if you were, your continual snarling at unnamed people on the forum and the bad vibes you cast are getting really tiresome. Show some respect. We know you don't like the M9. We get it. We know you think only certain photographers have license to talk about the M9. This was an amusing thread and made some people feel good before you arrived as a belligerent. Could you cut out the putdowns and snarling?

cheewai_m6 Posted November 17, 2009 Share #20 Posted November 17, 2009 Well then, maybe you could point me (us) to some comparisons that show just how "dismal" the M8 is compared to the M9. So far I haven't seen any, nor have I heard anyone with any kind of creds as a photographer make such a statement. why do you bother looking in the m9 forum if you don't like it? it's like going to a jaguar car club and telling everyone you don't like jaguars. spersky doesn't need to give graphic evidence that the m9 is better. maybe he just likes the way it feels, maybe he likes not having IR filters on his lenses, maybe he likes using a 35mm as a 35mm. that's enough reason there already.
