thompsonkirk Posted November 16, 2009 Share #1 Posted November 16, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Like other folks, I have hundreds of dollars of UVIR filters & realize I'm going to have to replace them with filters that are only for lens protection, on M9. I was going to order B+W UV filters, but noticed they now make some clear ones - perhaps intended tor digital lens protection? Are these the way to go on M9, or is there still an advantage in filtering out UV? Kirk
Advertisement Posted November 16, 2009 Posted November 16, 2009 Hi thompsonkirk, Take a look here UV or clear filters?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
thrice Posted November 16, 2009 Share #2 Posted November 16, 2009 No advantage in filtering UV on digital (unless you have no hot mirror). I don't think there will be a perceptable difference in the IQ or flare resistance between the UV and clear filters. If you shoot film it might be advantageous to get the UV filters. jaapv Posted November 16, 2009 Share #3 Posted November 16, 2009 All Leica lenses since ca 1955 have effective UV filtering, through the lens kit and coatings. Except in extreme circumstances, no extra UV filtering is needed. As I posted elsewhere, these protective filters, by Heliopan and B&W have the advantage of having tougher glass and thinner glass, which produces fewer aberrations. Sensors are quite UV sensitive btw. I have used my M8 for UV photography, using an old Summarit 50 1.5.
