Switching SDHC cards between cameras

I posted this in the digital forum, but thought I might get more response here...

I've been letting my Dlux 4 sit around while I almost exclusively use my M8.2 (to the extent that I might sell the former). Is there any issue or concern with taking a card that's been formatted in the Dlux 4, putting it in the M8.2 and reformatting it there for use? Probably a dumb question, but I seem to recall reading about the benefits of dedicating cards to just one camera.

It is a bit of roulette, sometimes it works, sometimes not.My DMR cards mess up my M8 and M9 and vica-versa, starting at shot 29. Better to reformat and dedicate cards to a specific camera type.

Same experience here with DLux3 and M8. Cards formatted for one would tend to hang up or be corrupted by the other. Better practice is to reformat.

Thanks, Jaap and 'Weinschel'. Sorry to be dense, but to clarify, can I take card that has been formatted in Dlux, put it in M8.2 and reformat it there before using (and dedicate it to the M thereafter)? Or, are you suggesting that it be reformatted outside the M first? If the latter, I don't know that process (I use a Mac Pro).

I appreciate any clarification.

Put the card in the M. Format it. Done. Want to use it in the Dlux? Put card in Dlux. Format it. Done. Repeat/swap card as much as you like between cameras but format the card when you put it in. Just don't format it in one camera and then stick it in the other without formatting it in *that* camera. While the card is interchangable, the camera-specific filesystem written while formatting is likely not.

Cheers,

Will

I have had a lot of problems with corruption that I THINK is from using the same cards in both r-d1 and M8 (even though always reformatting). Supposedly the M8 reformat will just repoint a directory, it doesn't really erase anything. The r-d1 has two different levels of reformatting, and so does the M9, apparently. Some believe that the Mac writes something to a SD card in a reader, and this can cause corruption issues. Some believe that reformatting outside of the camera can lead to corruption issues. For me, best practice is to use a card in one camera only and lock the card in the reader. It's easy enough. I think you would have to know a lot about the Mac OS and the M8 firmware, etc., to know what's really what. I did not get any full answer on this subject from Leica NJ.

Always reformat the card in the camera, this way you know that it will (should) be OK.

Regarding Mac 'writing back' to a card, I have never experienced this; if it keeps happening you can always set the read-omly slider on the card when you remove it from the camera; just remember to se it back when returning it to the M8.

Mac's write files back to the SD card that contain directory information. These files are hidden as they begin with a ".", and they are ignored by any other device including the M8. They are not required and locking the card will do no harm, unless you forget to unlock it back in the camera...
