marknorton Posted November 29, 2006 Share #1 Posted November 29, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have three examples of the hood which is used on the 21mm Elmarit ASPH and 24mm Elmarit ASPH, code 12592 This has 4 claws which engage in the slot in the lens carrier, however only one the three hoods fits tightly, the other two engage but move freely backwards and forwards by a mm or so. I've tried adjusting the claws by twisting them, but not much improvement. If you have this hood, how well does it fit your lens?
Advertisement Posted November 29, 2006 Posted November 29, 2006 Hi marknorton, Take a look here 21 + 24 Lens Hood. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wparsonsgisnet Posted November 29, 2006 Share #2 Posted November 29, 2006 Mark, I have the hood and 24mm lens, recently acquired to accompany the M8 (that device, not yet here). I was planning on posting about this because, altho the hood did fit properly in my case, it no longer latches now that I have the 55mm 486 filter mounted. So, rather than have the hood fall off at some inopportune time, I was getting ready to haul out the gaffers tape and make this thing really look beautiful. In short, my hood did fit after I wrestled with it, but it does not fit now. Also, the number 12592 is followed by the 3 chars A58, in my case. I will take any suggestions as replacements for the gaffer-tape-therapy I was planning. Regards,
jaapv Posted November 29, 2006 Share #3 Posted November 29, 2006 With filter I had to grind down the two little lugs onthe inside - now it fits perfectly.
marknorton Posted November 29, 2006 Author Share #4 Posted November 29, 2006 Yes, it's a snug fit over the lens barrel, so if the filter is even slightly bigger, it won't filt over the filter... cI've just bent the claws some more and it's a bit tighter. I hope Leica are actually trying these things out...
marknorton Posted November 29, 2006 Author Share #5 Posted November 29, 2006 With filter I had to grind down the two little lugs onthe inside - now it fits perfectly. Did you use a dentists drill to do it, Jaap? Maybe a bit like grinding down a molar, maybe?
jaapv Posted November 29, 2006 Share #6 Posted November 29, 2006 I use that a lot for my camera's - they have beautiful fillings... As a matter of fact it IS a versatile precision tool...

johnkuo Posted November 29, 2006 Share #8 Posted November 29, 2006 The hood on my 21ASPH is loose as well, but doesn't bother me enough to replace it. It's just cosmetic.

They can be tough to get on with a filter because you have to keep the hood perfectly square with the lens when putting it on. Another trick I learned with filters on these lenses (21mm and 24mm) is to leave the filter slightly loose until you get the hood on and the latched engaged. Guest guy_mancuso Posted November 30, 2006 Share #10 Posted November 30, 2006 I got my filters this morning from Germany for both my 21 and 24 and also had some trouble . I actually seperated the 21mm hood, super glued it back and I have it on now pretty darn tight. Looks like the filtesr are there for awhile now. Too much hassle to take off
xrogers Posted November 30, 2006 Share #11 Posted November 30, 2006 If you have this hood, how well does it fit your lens? Mine must be mounted square, and like yours, moves a mm or so once engaged. I can't say that the bit of movement bothers me, though. --clyde
leicapfile Posted November 30, 2006 Share #12 Posted November 30, 2006 I use my 24 wirh a E55 filter. As others have noted, the hood must be 'square' with the lens to engage easily. Same story when mounting the same hood to the v1 Tri-Elmar. What's really fun is to have to watch the hood cover that comes with the lens and hood (or at least did about 6 years ago when I got mine). It will pop off very easily. Too easily in fact. So far I've always noticed when it did. No doubt someday I won't, and I'll be looking for a new one. If they're less than $50 I'll be surprised. Somewhat off topic, but the 24 is a magnificent lens as others have noted from time to time. Jerry
wizard Posted November 30, 2006 Share #13 Posted November 30, 2006 I use a B+W E55 slim version (no front thread) filter with my 24mm lens, and the hood fits perfectly. The fit is very snug though, once fitted there is no movement at all, it seems to be unitary with the lens. Andy
wattsy Posted November 30, 2006 Share #14 Posted November 30, 2006 If it is a Leica or a B+W filter, the hood should fit and go on all the way to latch. I don't own the 24mm lens now but when I did I couldn't get the hood to fit over the B+W filter I bought for it at the time (MRC UV filter). I ended up getting the Leica UV filter which allowed the hood to fit fine.
M'Ate Posted November 30, 2006 Share #15 Posted November 30, 2006 I recently bought athe 24mm and have the Leica UV filter. I find it a snug fit, but not tight. However, there is a slot on the lens body for a pin on the hood and, once this is located, it seems to me that the hood would never come loose. Only a couple of films hve been past this lens, but what a stunning performer. Really very impressed. Don't have an aux viewfinder, as I bought it to use on the M8, but so far I'm getting away with it.
marknorton Posted December 1, 2006 Author Share #16 Posted December 1, 2006 If they're less than $50 I'll be surprised. Showing here at $27 + tax + s/h.
wparsonsgisnet Posted December 1, 2006 Share #17 Posted December 1, 2006 I must have the thick 486 filter from B+W, because the hood latches no longer fit into the channel on the lens body. I don't really want to bend the latches because I worry that they might then get hung up inside the works when I retract them. So far, I'm still planning on the Versace-duct-tape addition. I should mention, tho, that the B+W filter is really beautiful. It definitely suits a Leica.
leicapfile Posted December 1, 2006 Share #18 Posted December 1, 2006 Thanks Mark, I think I'll order a spare. But where is 'here'? Saw no link. Best, Jerry
marknorton Posted December 3, 2006 Author Share #19 Posted December 3, 2006 Jerome, "here" is the UK, I expect you can get one from B&H. I juast did an ex-tax conversion based on £1 = $1.
peter_n Posted December 3, 2006 Share #20 Posted December 3, 2006 I use a B+W E55 slim version (no front thread) filter with my 24mm lens, and the hood fits perfectly. The fit is very snug though, once fitted there is no movement at all, it seems to be unitary with the lens. Andy You are lucky Andy. My first try with the hood and it fitted over a regular B+W 55 MRC but wouldn't lock on the lens. So I bought a B+W 55 slim and the hood wouldn't even go over the filter - diameter was infinitesimally too big. Then I put the regular filter back on and pushed a bit harder when I fitted the hood and it went on! Aaaargh!! As everyone says, this 24mm is outstanding. I believe Leica have jacked the price up though.
