michael friedberg Posted November 13, 2009 Share #1 Posted November 13, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Does anything believe that my M9 uses battery power more quickly, and therefore exhausts the battery faster, than an M8? It seems to me that more processing is going on to produce 18 MP rather than 10. And from my first use of my new M9 that seems to be the case, but perhaps I didn't charge the battery enough since I was so anxious to try out a special new camera. Does anyone have similar experiences? Any more technical analyses? Thanks in advance.
Advertisement Posted November 13, 2009 Posted November 13, 2009 Hi michael friedberg, Take a look here M9 vs. M8 in battery use. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted November 13, 2009 Share #2 Posted November 13, 2009 I don't see much difference, but I did notice that the new battery that came with the M9 really needed three full empty-charge cycles to get to the same level as the older batteries I use. Ario Arioldi Posted November 13, 2009 Share #3 Posted November 13, 2009 My personal experience is that with the M9 I can take appprox 80% of the number of shot I take with the M8 (using the same battery). Cheers, Ario
johnbuckley Posted November 13, 2009 Share #4 Posted November 13, 2009 I actually am finding the M9 performs better than the M8 or M8.2 when it comes to draining batteries. Although as Jaap said, the new battery itself needs to be broken in before it performs sufficiently and registers its charge level accurately. JPH1962 Posted November 13, 2009 Share #5 Posted November 13, 2009 I can sign latest statement as well - my M9 performs better than both of my M8. I set it to 1min auto-off and have the preview to show only while I maintain the shutter pressed down after release. That works very well. JPH1962 Posted November 13, 2009 Share #7 Posted November 13, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) well - I should have written that I dont go to the end of the battery - but the difference is there. Basically, I spend my lunchbreak usually walking through the city and grabbing pics here and there - with the M8 the battery is around half empty after a single day, the M9 nine lasts around 3 or 4 days... I will have a more precise look and come back. With the preview only activated with the relealese pressed, the monitor is on much less on the M9 - may thats enough already. rgds JPH
noah_addis Posted November 14, 2009 Share #8 Posted November 14, 2009 I haven't done any scientific testing (and I no longer own an M8), but my M9 seems to get better battery life. During a heavy day of shooting with the M9 I generally use two batteries. The first one is used until it's dead and the second one is about half-3/4 used by the end of the day. During a day such as this I may shoot around 25GB worth of uncompressed DNGs. With the M8 I would often start a third battery under such conditions while shooting around 6-8GB of photos. I haven't compared the number of photos or shooting modes, etc. But I definitely get more GB per battery with the M9. I should also point out that two of my batteries are brand new, so they may not have had enough cycles to reach their full capacity.
Ario Arioldi Posted November 14, 2009 Share #9 Posted November 14, 2009 If the comparison is done in terms of GB per battery, I'm with you. What still is surprising me is the experience of some Forum's user who apparently can take more pics per battery with the M9 than with the M8. This is not my experience and is not even the opinion expressed by Stephen Daniel of Leica in his video interview to LL. Cheers, Ario
JPH1962 Posted November 14, 2009 Share #10 Posted November 14, 2009 I think the consumption is simply function of the usage you do of the monitor and of the personal settings such as power of and automatic preview. Today was a short day for taking photographs - 145 compressed dng's and battery at 75% JPH

I'm interested to hear how you condition the battery initially. Are you charging and then putting it in the M9 with all power save modes off and letting it run down (say with LCD on), or are you just using the camera until the battery is dead and then rinse & repeat the cycle? jev Posted November 15, 2009 Share #12 Posted November 15, 2009 Mine can take about 20% more pics then M8

gwelland Posted November 17, 2009 Share #16 Posted November 17, 2009 Does the m9 and the m8 use the same battery? Yes One thing I did notice is that although the part number is the same 14464, the battery that came with my M9 is slightly different in so far as the OEM battery has white printed information on the raised tab side yet the spare battery I kept from my M8 has an embossed battery information panel on the opposite side. They share the same part number though.

gwelland Posted November 17, 2009 Share #18 Posted November 17, 2009 Would anyone attempt three or four weeks to places without electricty withe the M digital? How you manage it? Take a lot of spare batteries or alternatively I would consider bringing along either a solar charger or a high capacity external battery that you can convert to A/C or 12V via the car adapter. I have a "]Portable Power Station that I use with my MacBook Pro but you can also get adapters for 110V or 12V car adapter output. You can use the adapter to connect to the Leica charger. Remember also that the Leica charger has a car battery adapter so you can always recharge from a vehicle via the cigarette lighter/DC adapter. I guess if you really are out in the boonies it'll be the solar solution ...
