Rolo Posted November 12, 2009 Share #1 Posted November 12, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Warning: THIS IS THE FILM FORUM Film Leica owners, listen to Stephen Schaub talk about film on Inside Analog photo Radio at 2009 August | Inside Analog Photo Radio & TV Don't listen to the first three mins of advertising, after 11 mins it gets real interesting for film photographers and at 19m40s he comments on pitching "his M7 with a good scan against anything the M9 is going to do". Makes some interesting points and it's fun to listen to as long as you've not laid £4,850 out for an M9. Enjoy
Advertisement Posted November 12, 2009 Posted November 12, 2009 Hi Rolo, Take a look here M7 versus M9 .... [definitely not for M9 owners]. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
TimF Posted November 12, 2009 Share #2 Posted November 12, 2009 Thanks for that. I subbed in iTunes and see there's a podcast by Riccis in there.

aesop Posted November 12, 2009 Share #5 Posted November 12, 2009 ...damn, we've been rumbled - the secret's out . Hopefully it will still be too much of a low-tech set-up for the "Sod the image, whaddya mean it's not the latest camera?" digi-mob.
biglouis Posted November 12, 2009 Share #6 Posted November 12, 2009 Awesome. I didn't realise how clever I was buying that M7....
Frank Sprow Posted November 12, 2009 Share #7 Posted November 12, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) My pro scan generated big prints (13" x 20") from Velvia or Ektar 100 using the M7 are fully the equal and often a bit better than results from my M8.2 (M9 on order but not here yet). Nonetheless, the use of digital for assignments and it's ease of use makes it essential as well - at least for me. It will be nice to have both over my shoulder (M7 and M9) and I'll probably have TriX in the M7.

Enjoy I just bought the M9 and I already knew that an M7 with a good scan will out do any digital camera including the M9 and the top Canikons. Did not even need to listen to the podcast but I will. I shoot digital because it fits better with m lifestyle and the M9 allowed me to move into the Leica world. Once I get back on my feet from the purchase, I will probably look for a nice M film body for when I do need the ultimate quality. Pete PS: Ken Rockwell said that a long time ago... Rolo Posted November 12, 2009 Author Share #9 Posted November 12, 2009 It is only fun guys, I've got an M9 on order and earn my living selling images from digital Leica and Canon cameras. Here's a party question: If one has a £500 Fuji 690GS, or GSW, and the images are scanned on a Hasselblad X5, or drum scanner, per se ........ how much would one need to spend on a digital camera, of any make, to match the quality of a well scanned scanned file from the Fuji? Answers on a post card, please.
rob_x2004 Posted November 12, 2009 Share #10 Posted November 12, 2009 Manufacturers making God for gas. Obsolescence decisions are the new religion. Ps ... Was gonna Ps and ask when you were getting yours Rolo but I see you beat us to the punch:D:D I liked his story about the ninety dollar scanner files sent to Belgium. This is taken with a GW 690II on Velvia, I think the S2, in the better samples I've seen, is about the equivalent when scanned with an Epson V700 with a well tuned work flow, with a high end scanner, there still is no amount of money you can spend to match 6x9 quality. I love my film Ms and the reason I want an M9 is to free up a little time I devote to scanning.

Answers on a post card, please. Rolo, I had a similar conversation on 9/9/9 with a non photographer friend when I mentioned the Leica podcast which I was missing at the time. He couldn't believe that anyone would pay £15000 for a camera (S2) and I said that that was the big difference with digital imaging - previously you could buy an old Rollieflex and make as good quality photos as anyone. Today , to be a pro in certain areas, you need to be able to afford a couple of S2's and several lenses........... See my post in the Bar for examples of MF negatives, made with a very old box camera! Progress?
