Guest WPalank Posted November 12, 2009 Share #1 Posted November 12, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) After having a near disaster with a bicyclist and a neck strap for my M8, I decided to rethink my on the street workflow and ordered a wrist strap from Gordy's because they were so highly touted among Forum members. First off, I thought the price was quite reasonable and it arrived in the post quite quickly (I'm in California and he's in Oregon if memory serves me). I decided on the string strap mainly because the other option was a metal lug and metal to me in this digital age just says "I love to scratch LCDs and other expensive parts in and around your camera bag". Anyway, the product seems to be of the highest quality and quite durable, but there's just something about trusting a string to support a $$$$ camera and lens combo from certain death on a sidewalk pavement. To keep doomsayers like my self at ease, our friend Gary has included pictures on his well designed website that include elephants with a tiny thai mahout hanging from the back being suspended by one of these little marvels. (Actually that might be the Claret talking as it is about 7 PM here on the west coast). But anyway, he does have something with a formidable weight dangling from one of his strings. Anyway, I guess my point is, has anyone else had any experience or reservations with this specific strap? Picture and website below: gordy's camera straps Welcome, dear visitor! Advertisement Posted November 12, 2009 Posted November 12, 2009 Hi Guest WPalank, Take a look here Gordy's for an M9. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
AlanJW Posted November 12, 2009 Share #2 Posted November 12, 2009 I have Gordy's neckstraps on a couple of small cameras (including a DLux 3) and for small cameras I really like them. They are extremely well made and I am sure will be more than adequate as a wrist strap. However, I'm a neckstrap and not a wrist strap person, and Gordys is to me a bit thin as a neckstrap for an M9 or similar weight camera. My choice for a neckstrap for an M is Luigi's. I had him make me one slightly longer than usual as I like to wear the camera low.
d2mini Posted November 12, 2009 Share #3 Posted November 12, 2009 I love Gordy's straps. (had a luigi case/strap for my dlux and liked that too) Had a wrist strap just like yours for my Ricoh GX100 and here's my current gordy strap on my ep1. It has the wider neck piece. Both are great. You can also find different wrist straps at Gordy's which attach directly to a ring and do look even stronger: gordy's camera straps Same's available for neck straps, of course... jplomley Posted November 12, 2009 Share #5 Posted November 12, 2009 I've got Gordy's straps on both of my M8's and M7. Less clutter in the bag compared to a neck strap, and the camera on the wrist is much more discrete than one around the neck or slung over a shoulder. And of course, the camera is always at hand
rennsport Posted November 12, 2009 Share #6 Posted November 12, 2009 That looks great. In fact, I've got the Gordy's strap for my M9 too. Now I only need an M9, regardless of its color!
Gerard Posted November 12, 2009 Share #7 Posted November 12, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I use the wrist strap on my M8.2, but it's the item with a metal ring - the rubber o-ring does a perfect job of preventing scratches.
danyves Posted November 12, 2009 Share #8 Posted November 12, 2009 One can easily use a neck strap as a wrist strap.
pharyngula Posted November 12, 2009 Share #9 Posted November 12, 2009 I have exactly the same wrist strap with string on my M8.2 but I now have another strap on order with the split ring. I harbor similar reservations about the string and while I am sure it is quite strong (I used the existing string strap on a G9 and a D-lux 3 before that), I just can't trust it with an M. I'm not concerned about scratching the body with the split ring because I use a Luigi half case. Plus, as Darth points out, the O-ring offers very simple protection on a naked camera. moikle Posted November 12, 2009 Share #12 Posted November 12, 2009 I use this on my M's Artisan&Artist* Straps Much more secure. Mike
stevelap Posted November 12, 2009 Share #13 Posted November 12, 2009 I have a Gordy wrist strap (non-cord) that's still going strong and can recommend them, used first on an M8 with the Leica grip and now on an M9 with a Thumbs Up. The A&A version is very nice (as is Luigi's, I believe) and I might have got one if I'd seen it first, but it is three times the price of a Gordy if memory serves. Maybe, but when in use the rings don't contact the camera, they are far above it. I'm not really worried about that, but for those who are Gordy also has options with leather protectors. Guest WPalank Posted November 12, 2009 Share #15 Posted November 12, 2009 Maybe, but when in use the rings don't contact the camera, they are far above it. I'm not really worried about that, but for those who are Gordy also has options with leather protectors. But the problem is if you place the camera in a camera bag, for instance, I believe the round clips can reach the LCD screen and scratch it. My suggestion would be to get rid of the string thingies and connect the round fasteners directly to the camera eyelets.
viramati Posted November 12, 2009 Share #16 Posted November 12, 2009 doesn't look very safe to me. No way would I trust £4850 of M9 and lens to such a thing, Dlux maybe M9 no. Personally I have a short Artisan and artists neck strap and when walking holding the camera I find that with the 'Thumbs up' attached I feel no need for wrist strap ------------------- David Sampson Photography
ho_co Posted November 13, 2009 Share #17 Posted November 13, 2009 Hey, it's only a camera! Did you check the proofs of performance half-way down the page at gordy's camera straps, under the heading "How strong are they?" If it worries you, don't use it. But it'll work fine. That's why the guy's around.
epand56 Posted November 13, 2009 Share #18 Posted November 13, 2009 After trying them all on my M8u, in the end I've stuck with the Leicagoodies "Sling" as the better solution for my hand held needs, ( Get your SLING for the Leica M! ) along with the "Strap" when want the camera resting on my side ( Get your STRAP for the Leica M! ). Never used anything else since. Don't like the feel of something around my wrist and the Sling help me to keep the camera steadier.
d2mini Posted November 13, 2009 Share #19 Posted November 13, 2009 But the problem is if you place the camera in a camera bag, for instance, I believe the round clips can reach the LCD screen and scratch it. My suggestion would be to get rid of the string thingies and connect the round fasteners directly to the camera eyelets. Yup, goes in the bag and one side the ring does have the ability to reach around towards the screen but i have a screen protector on it. The rings are very smooth and the finish on the camera is strong. No sign of wear yet. And again, not really worried about it. Besides, I thought marks were a sign of a well used camera! The nylon cords are great because they keep the leather strap out of the way when shooting. Away from your fingers, not getting in the way of reaching buttons or how you hold it. And they are really strong.
arthury Posted November 14, 2009 Share #20 Posted November 14, 2009 That single thread looping into metal hole of the M9 seem like trouble to me. You better be checking every time you pick it to make sure it is NOT worn out. Any one experience this thread breakage?
