andybarton Posted July 6, 2006 Share #1 Posted July 6, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Or should I try "Gast haus im Solms/Wetzlar?" My R8 is fixed and they are happy for me to go an collect it if I wish (or they will ship it back to me in their weekly shipment) So, I am now just trying to arrange the logistics of getting over there and back in a couple of days. Does anyone have any tips re suitable places to rest a weary head or two in Solms / Wetzlar? (just a B&B type operation, not too expensive) I would probably either fly to Bonn and hire a car, or maybe take the ferry/tunnel. Either way, I can't get there and back in a day. Many thanks
Advertisement Posted July 6, 2006 Posted July 6, 2006 Hi andybarton, Take a look here Guest house in Solms / Wetzlar?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
starwatcher Posted July 6, 2006 Share #2 Posted July 6, 2006 Andy, I do a partial translation for the German speakers (Wetzlar/Solms might raise their attention...)

norbertnl Posted July 6, 2006 Share #4 Posted July 6, 2006 Andy, This one looks decent, plus it seems to be located quite in the middle of Wetzlar: http://www.hotel-euler-haus.de/index.html. For a comparison you may want to check this website: http://www.hrs.de. I once tried the 'Domblick Pension', which was fine except for a somewhat gruffy lady at the reception. In Solms, hotels en b&b seem to be scarce. On the web I only found this one: http://www.tourisline.de/travelstore/control/walkin/search?agentid=12424&city=117834&hotelid=J1UL64OuSqI=. Don't know how it is, however. Solms is a very short train ride from Wetzlar (only a couple of minutes). However, if you're planning to go both to the CS and to the factory (which I would recommend), it is helpful to have either a car or a bicycle with you. macos Posted July 6, 2006 Share #5 Posted July 6, 2006 Hi, I haven't been in a hotel in this area, but according to the net Gasthof "Am Turm", http://www.amturm.de doesn't look too bad. B&B is 27 EUR. It is in Braunfels (http://www.braunfels.de/) which is close to Solms (5 km). A small town, but has a nice scenery and a castle. On the page of Braunfels -> Touristik -> Unterkünfte -> Pensionen (or Hotels) are also other offers. Good luck Marcus P.S.: haven't seen Norbert's post
andybarton Posted July 6, 2006 Author Share #6 Posted July 6, 2006 Thanks Guys It all depends upon whether I can get a two/three day pass from "the-powers-that-be"... I have some work to do tonight!

Dan States Posted July 6, 2006 Share #8 Posted July 6, 2006 Skip Solms and stay in Braunfels. It's a beautiful town and only about 2km from Solms. It's full of the images Leica used in their brochures in the 80's-90's. The Schloss Hotel is a big old musty place I have enjoyed several times. Best wishes Dan

wbesz Posted July 6, 2006 Share #10 Posted July 6, 2006 Thanks for the map Mark. Interesting thread for me too, as I am considering visiting in the next 2 or 3 months.
andybarton Posted July 7, 2006 Author Share #11 Posted July 7, 2006 Thanks for the advice guys. Unfortunately, my wife and I can't get three days leave during the week together until about March next year (or that's what it feels like), so I have had to put this little jaunt off. Hopefully, the R8 will be back with me in around 10 days.
richam Posted July 7, 2006 Share #12 Posted July 7, 2006 Andy, When we visited the factory in 2002, Karl-Hans Welcker was our guide and found us a very comfortable and reasonable Gast Haus in the area. I don't remember the name, but Karl is very helpful, and I'm sure if you contact him via phone or email, he would be happy to set you up. leicapages Posted July 7, 2006 Share #13 Posted July 7, 2006 Hi Andy, my last visit to Solms dates already a number of years back. I took once part in an English course at the Leica Akademie, you can find the description of it on my webpages. Stay was at the hotel Wetzlarer Hof (3 stars), not exactly what you are looking for, but nevertheless affordable. I am sure there may be cheaper options as well. andybarton Posted July 7, 2006 Author Share #14 Posted July 7, 2006 Yesterday, I was cheeky and asked Leica Customer Service in Milton Keynes for their recommendations (all part of the service, I thought ). As usual, they have excelled themselves. Here's a couple of suggestions from them (Although they have no affiliation with any hotel of course and this is not an official endorsement!. These are just suggestions from people who have stayed there.) http://www.hotel-ami.de/h-27660-E/bilder/parkhotel-himmelreich-in-braunfels-b.-wetzlar.htm http://www.wetzlarerhof.de/ I hope to be able to have the opportunity to try one of these places out in the future. It seems that some names are mentionned more than once, which is always a good sign.
ebwilson Posted July 14, 2006 Share #15 Posted July 14, 2006 If you do fly there, Frankfurt is much closer. And the train to Giessen/Wetzlar is a cinch.
