I picked up a nice as new 6 bit coded 24/2.8 Elmarit-M today and it came with a "certified pre-owned" Leica NJ warranty card.

How does a lens end up with this? Serviced lens by Leica or is this the sign of another channel?

The lens really is like new and so I'm not worried, just curious ...

Can anyone explain?

Basically these are used (i.e pre-owned) lenses from any source where the dealer goes to the effort of having Leica check and service it in order to stand behind a 1-year-warranty. I notice it is USUALLY dealers with a larger Leica presence/stock who bother to do this - or close proximity to Leica NJ.

There's not a lot to go wrong with a lens (maybe a bit more with RF lenses since the focus calibration is so touchy), so a lot of dealers probably take in used, sell it as used, and likely make about the same margin. But you can figure a "certified pre-owned" lens is likely mint cosmetic shape - and yes, has been checked by a Leica tech.

BTW, the lenses (and cameras) Leica reps carry around for demos and Leica Days also get sold off every so often at discount prices as "Code U," with 1-year-warranties, so that the reps can have fresh stock to show. My local store has a "Code U" 75 Summarit right now for about $200 less than "new".

"Demo" lenses are strictly something dealers do on their own - a never-sold lens (or camera) that has picked up some shelf-wear over time. Regular 3-year warranty, all the boxes and hods and stuff, no previous owner, but not in perfect "new" condition.

Andy,

the used/checked descriptions sounds like my lens. Perfect, 12mths warranty & I noticed it had a Leica plastic bag (black LEICA lettering) vs the stock bag with s/n sticker or no bag at all. When my lens & M8u came back from Leica NJ they were packed the same branded plastic bags.

Can you tell a code U lens btw?
