Advertisement Posted November 9, 2009 Posted November 9, 2009 Hi tashley, Take a look here I will be shooting the S2 against the P45+ on Wednesday. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
mhoersch Posted November 9, 2009 Share #2 Posted November 9, 2009 Please, Tashley, do make a decent photograph, we know you can do it, maybe even a funny one! The samples we've seen so far are so inadequate and boring they could drive you to tears if there not more important things to cry about...
c6gowin Posted November 9, 2009 Share #3 Posted November 9, 2009 I look forward to hearing about your experience. I got to shoot the S2 at Leica's studio demo in NYC during PhotoPlus and found the camera a pleasure to shoot. I preferred to set the autofocus to manual so it is started with the rear thumb button and not associated with the shutter button. Some people shot with the autofocus triggered from the shutter button but I found the rear button more convenient and confident. Leica allowed us to keep the images we took and they also allowed people to do side by side comparisons with their own cameras. Leica was very open about the shoot. c6gowin Posted November 9, 2009 Share #4 Posted November 9, 2009 I agree with Manfred and hope you get to shoot the S2 in a variety of conditions to see what it can really do outside of a studio. I am not a studio shooter - more interested in lanscape and environmental portraits (for a lack of a better term).

I promise to try but this will be a studio session (I hate studio work but I do have to do it sometimes!) so I can't guarantee anything that looks like the real world... I shot one briefly several weeks ago but couldn't keep the results nor compare them with anything else - it was a real pre-production model. Glad to hear that you enjoyed the shoot.... did you post any?

Ditto but this will be in the centre-most part of central London so I am not hopeful of getting any real landscapes.... but Hyde Park isn't too far away so maaaaaybeee..... :D:D
c6gowin Posted November 10, 2009 Share #8 Posted November 10, 2009 Tim, I posted a couple of dng files on YouSendIt for people to download and process themselves. However, the download limit was hit pretty quickly. I haven't posted any processed images. I shot with both the 70mm and 180mm. Both handle very well and produce excellent results. I tended to like the 180mm, but wished the close focus distance was a tad closer. When I first shot it, I couldn't get focus lock and then realized that I was inside the minimum focus distance. Still I think it will be a must have lens. I could be very happy with the 180mm and the 30-90mm zoom (I just wished it was coming out sooner). Hyde Park is beautiful but I don't know what it will look like this time of year. My daughter did an internship in London last year and lived in South Kensington a few blocks from Hyde Park so I have been there a few times. Perhaps you can step out of the studio briefly and try some street shots with the S2. There is always something interesting on London streets. I think the S2 is very comfortable to hand hold. I just don't know how low of shutter speed or how high ISO can be used before loosing too much resolution. That is last unknown for me - I already know the other features of the camera suit me. Come to think of it, there are Rolls Royce and Bentley dealerships there too, so you might be able to get some car shots:D.
Guest guy_mancuso Posted November 10, 2009 Share #10 Posted November 10, 2009 I will have a production model in my hands December 8,9 and part of the 10th. No restrictions shoot whatever I want and that includes raw files can be loaded for sharing and also have the X1. Look for the review. Will have a P40+ with new DF body, P30+ and P45+ on hand to use as a test bed. Tim good luck with your shoot.

I know the area quite well and I doubt I'd get as far as Hyde Park even if I made a run for it! But Bruton Place has some interesting shopfronts, there are always waiters and chefs smoking outside the restaurants (Bellamy's , Yum!) so there should be no shortage - all I need is permission to leave the building! sdai Posted November 10, 2009 Share #14 Posted November 10, 2009 Look for the review. Will have a P40+ with new DF body, P30+ and P45+ on hand to use as a test bed.. Guy, If you could bring along a D3x and include some "identical" outdoor shots, dogs, cats, human beings, trees, cacti, anything outdoor in general, that would be all I want to see. Thanks a lot in advance.
Guest guy_mancuso Posted November 10, 2009 Share #15 Posted November 10, 2009 No D3x around here my friend all the BIG stuff. I have a GF1. LOL Studio and outdoor scenes, a REAL test . Jack and I are doing it together

Jack and I are doing it together Thanks a lot, Guy ... but I already knew what the bad boys can do very well. From my perspective, a direct comparison to the D3x is more interesting, if the S2 can't demonstrate a substantial edge over the D3x then there's no value add to me. Your test could provide some good pointers too and I'm looking forward to seeing it. I've zero interest in studio shots.

Jamie Roberts Posted November 17, 2009 Share #18 Posted November 17, 2009 Thanks a lot, Guy ... but I already knew what the bad boys can do very well. From my perspective, a direct comparison to the D3x is more interesting, if the S2 can't demonstrate a substantial edge over the D3x then there's no value add to me {snipped} Simon--I'm confused--you already know the answer to this dilemma. "Substantial edge" is going to be in the eye of the user.... 1:1 and for for any given print, the S2 and D3x are going to be indistinguishable (probably up to about 30 * 40)--as long as you can match the sharpness of the Leica S glass with equivalent Nikkor. Now, IMO that's not going to be easy, BTW, from what I've seen of the S lenses wide open. IMO you can count on one or two fingers the current glass from Nikon that even comes close to replicating M or R glass let alone S glass. If Leica says it's the best glass they've ever made, then that is something to be dealt with... But for a lot of people (even me, most of the time) it's just not that important to have MF resolution and absolute optical greatness in the corners But as a system, however, in my view, the S2 will beat the Nikon everytime in terms of IQ on the glass alone. But overall IQ will be better because of other things as well. For example, I personally like the colour better from Kodak sensors by a long way over the Sonys, which while fine are weird as the ISO goes up, and even the preliminary shots I've seen from the S2 have that MF look in terms of colour. Heck, Nikon doesn't even make a first rate AF standard prime for their cameras--which to me says a lot about what they think of absolute IQ over expediency! It's an embarrassment, IMO (and I'm a Nikon owner and shooter). And while their zooms are great zooms, they are in no way equal to my 19 Elmarit or 50R Lux or 80 R Lux or 100 R APO Elmarit. Sorry. And they're optically slow...which is only partly compensated for by higher ISO (with less DR) performance, because I can't get the look I want with a 35 f2.8... On the plus side for the Nikon is higher absolute ISO and the best autofocus on the planet (not to mention relatively rapid firing). Oh, and let's not forget the $20K+ price difference So I'm really not sure why you want a D3x comparison in terms of IQ... there are all kinds of reasons to like Nikon, of course.... For normal shots with average photographic skill and time (in other words for amateur use), the D3x is going to be the better move. If you're a wedding photographer or a sports photographer, the Nikon is the more logical choice, all things considered. But with the right skill and knowledge, and the right application, however, the absolute results from the S2 will--I have no doubt--be better. Will this show up in prints? Not in smaller ones, unless you're looking for faster shots wide open and more consistency with absolute (not auto) focus. Having said that, I've already promised myself that if the rental house here in Toronto gets an S2 I will rent it for a job or two, just to see what it can do in absolute terms. For purchase or lease, I wish it had a smaller, more 35mm-ish, R-compatible little brother that was $10K or less
