robofc Posted November 9, 2009 Share #1 Posted November 9, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I have a silver 28 summicron and the hood is too big and plastic. I would like to replace it with a hood similar to the Hermes hood or the hood that came with the Safari M8.2. Does anyone have any suggestions for a metal, smaller hood, preferably in chrome? And why does Leica diminish the quality of the fine lenses with ungainly, plastic hoods. I saw on leicarumors that a Japanese Leica shop had a prototype M7 Hermes with a gorgeous chrome hood on its 35 summilux. It would be great if Leica started producing hoods in that style. gwelland Posted November 9, 2009 Share #3 Posted November 9, 2009 In the case of the 28 'cron I wish they made a hood that wasn't 2 part and has a tendency to fall apart too. I had two split in half between the mount part and the plastic hood. My buddy who bought the lens from me had it happen to the new hood I gave him too. Btw, most Leica chrome/silver lens have black hoods with maybe silver accents if you are lucky. The 28 'cron I felt was one of the more discreet hoods and functional at least. dpattinson Posted November 9, 2009 Share #4 Posted November 9, 2009 I've been trying the hood from the 35mm Summilux asph on my 28cron. I'm told there is no vignetting and it certainly is more compact than the 28 hood.
wlaidlaw Posted November 9, 2009 Share #5 Posted November 9, 2009 I have been using the heavyweight 28 Summicron hood on my 35 ASPH Lux because I got fed up with picking the lens hood of the original 35 hood off the ground, when it fell off. The 28 Cron hood is a bit of a beast and I have ordered a Contax GG2 circular metal hood and GK56 metal cap, both in silver titanium finish, for my chrome Lux. My original 28 Summicron hood and cap will be up for grabs when the Contax pair arrive. Wilson
gwelland Posted November 9, 2009 Share #6 Posted November 9, 2009 I bet Contax never dreamed that their GGx hoods would live on mounted on so many other lenses. I use the GG1 on my Panasonic 20/1.7 too. Nice hoods for anything needing 46mm hoods .
noah_addis Posted November 9, 2009 Share #7 Posted November 9, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've been using a 35 'Lux Asph hood with no problems with vignetting, etc. It's not perfect, but it works. Or, sometimes I just leave the hood off altogether. The lens doesn't flare much and without a hood it's very compact.
geesbert Posted November 9, 2009 Share #8 Posted November 9, 2009 Although they look cheap, I prefer plastic hoods, as they take much more impact than metal ones. I'd rather have a plastic hood break off than snap the front thread of a lens. I have yet to crack, bend or jam a plastic hood. The hood design I prefer most is the 35 summicron one. it is very effective, yet really small. I even like the rubbery flap cap, I haven't lost one it 8 years of use, though a few people seem to hate it.
jonoslack Posted November 9, 2009 Share #9 Posted November 9, 2009 I rather disliked my 28 'cron until I had a revelation. Take It Off I've not seen any flare, but if I think it's likely I simply shade the lens with my hand - it's more efficient than the lens hood, and you quickly get the knack. Suddenly the 28 'cron is a delightful little lens.
wattsy Posted November 9, 2009 Share #10 Posted November 9, 2009 Because they work. Agreed. The 'retro' metal ones are just as large (if not larger) and, being circular, are less optimised to the rectangular shape of the film/sensor. That said, the 28mm Summicron hood is a bit of a clunker and I replaced mine with the 35 Summilux hood (when I was using an M8). I haven't used the 28 yet with my M9 so I've no idea if it will vignette with that hood or not.

I think others have had different experiences though using that combo.
robofc Posted November 10, 2009 Author Share #12 Posted November 10, 2009 I thought the contax GG2 hood was 45mm instead of 46mm. Will it screw on?
wlaidlaw Posted November 10, 2009 Share #13 Posted November 10, 2009 I thought the contax GG2 hood was 45mm instead of 46mm. Will it screw on? No - all the GG hoods and Contax G lenses other than the Hologon 16 and Biogon 21 are 46mm filter thread. The 21mm is a 55mm filter thread and the Hologon has a special snap in arrangement for its radially graduated neutral density filter. I was sure I still had a GG2 hood around somewhere but I could not find it after a lot of searching. I sold both my Contax G bodies to a friend as part of the funding of my M8 a few years ago, so maybe I gave him the hood with the bodies. I found a company in China who is making these hoods new and the GK56 lens caps also. The upside is that the caps no longer have the stamped in Contax logo on them. I would like to find a similar hood for my 50 ZM chrome Planar but choices for a 43mm x 0.75 filter thread seem limited. The standard CZ bayonet hood is very effective but a bit large and clumsy. It is available also only in black, which looks strange on a chrome lens. Any ideas anyone? Wilson
wlaidlaw Posted November 10, 2009 Share #14 Posted November 10, 2009 Coincidentally, my Contax GG2 hood and GK56 cap arrived in the post this morning. Here are before and after shots of the 35 Lux on an M9 and I know which hood I prefer. The package contained a brief note saying that they were sure I would be delighted by the fact that they had found an original titanium metal sprayed finish Contax cap with logo (hence its slightly yellowish appearance). It would seem churlish to go back and say "no I would rather have had a copy one in silver paint without the logo". Wilson

wattsy Posted November 10, 2009 Share #16 Posted November 10, 2009 Wilson, that's presumably the 35 Summilux with the clunker 28 Summicron hood?
wlaidlaw Posted November 10, 2009 Share #17 Posted November 10, 2009 Wilson, that's presumably the 35 Summilux with the clunker 28 Summicron hood? Ian, That is indeed the 28 Summicron Frankenhood on a 35 ASPH Lux. I changed over to the clunky 28 Summicron hood after losing 2 of the original 35 Lux lens caps and having recovered others after them dropping off on numerous occasions. The hoods varied and on some, the cap is quite tight but on mine it was very loose. I got bored with buying new caps, which from the price, you would think were made from Iridium plated unobtanium, not a squidgy plastic moulding. I checked this morning for vignetting on the M9 with the Lux wide open and the Contax hood. I think it is OK but I am not 100% sure there is no more than the natural amount of the lens. Of course the Contax 35mm Planar G, for which the hood was originally designed, was only an f2. Wilson
