Patrickxyz Posted November 8, 2009 Share #1 Posted November 8, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) After worrying reports and warnings in other fora about Capture One 5 stripping metadata introduced with Photomechanic I have done some tests to understand what is going on. Hope the information is of help to someone. (All test were done with M8 DNG and OS 10.6.1. PM is version 4.6.1.) 1. Ingest in Photomechanic, than use CO 4.8.3 to create JPG or TIFF. - CO do not show but keeps nearly all IPTC metadata and puts them into JPG or TIFF files. - The big exception is the copyright note that is lost in output. - All metadata that are marked as XMP in PM are gone in output. 2. Ingest in PM, than use CO 5 to create JPG or TIFF. - CO shows and keeps all IPTC metadata and puts them into JPG or TIFF files. - All metadata that are marked as XMP in PM are gone in output. 3. Ingest in PM, create session in CO 4.8.3 and migrate session to CO5. - All IPTC metadata are lost in output except keywords. - All metadata that are marked as XMP in PM are gone in output. 4. Ingest in PM, open session in CO 4.8.3, take DNG out of capture folder and create new session with CO5. - CO5 shows and keeps all IPTC metadata and puts them into JPG or TIFF files. - All metadata that are marked as XMP in PM are gone in output. My understanding is that due to the migration of 4.8.3 session to CO5-session the metadata information are lost in exporting from CO5. But the PM-introduced metadata still exist in readable form in the DNG. For older pictures and sessions at this time the choice seems to be either - to skip migration, lose old 4.8.3 session settings, but keep metadata in output and rework all pictures in CO5 or - to use session migration and to lose nearly all metadata in exporting from CO5 or - to stay with CO 4.8.3 Otherwise until now CO5 works much smoother on my system. Patrickxyz Posted November 8, 2009 Author Share #2 Posted November 8, 2009 I will give an answer by myself. There is a solution to the problem which was recommended to me on the CO customer forum. In scenario 3 (migration of sessions to CO5, see below) at first the metadata are not recognized. But one can use the command "load metadata" using the dropdown menu in the top right of the metadata tab. This brings back all IPTC metadata even the ones CO 4.8.3 did not like. The load command can be even used with several pictures marked so it is just a matter of seconds after migration of a session. It seems that CO5 is finally able to handle IPTC metadata without problems and what CO 4.8.3 in my experience never managed to do. In my opinion that is a very good reason to upgrade. The only wish I would have in that respect is that CO5 works with the XMP metadata like autor's address etc. as well. Patrick PS: But I did found an anomalie that seems to be a bug. Use PM for metadata and don't give a headline but a description to the picture. In this case, at least on my system, by importing into CO5 the description ends up in the headline field together with some command line. This doesn't happen if description and headline are given to the picture. 3. Ingest in PM, create session in CO 4.8.3 and migrate session to CO5. - All IPTC metadata are lost in output except keywords. - All metadata that are marked as XMP in PM are gone in output.
