M9 - A Fabulous Buy!

The M9 is a seriously great camera but then so to is my M8.2. The Canon 5D I owned got traded up for the 5DMKII and I thought on reflection that the images from the 5D were better than the mkii in that they had more character - more of a certain look which I liked.

But then I wanted to try Leica glass and so traded my 5DMKII and three good canon lenses for a new M8.2 and Summilux 50mm. I then added the 24mm Elmarit. And I am very content. I love how rangefinders work and the greatest thing is the portability I have. No camera bag needed anymore. Very portable and quality that is better than the 5D I had.

Well I output to A3. So I need a camera that gives me the best prints at A3 and I have found it in the M8.2. I don't really need to know anything else on the technical side - it doesn't matter to me that the M9 has better iso or is 18mp fullframe because you can't see a difference at A3. My previous champion at A3 was the 5D and unfortunately the 5D Mkii wasn't better and I have tested the M8.2 and found it better at A3 than the 5D - so personally I have reached the end of my technical search for quality. And in that sense I need no longer worry. When I shoot in conditions that would require higher than ISO640 I use balanced flash. I actually use a Nikon sb-800 without problems.

One day we will get tired with all the ISO talk and so on and just start thinking realistically what is our artistic intention and what output do we need - then we chose the system that matches those.

In this case, yes. The client is a graphic designer and she liked this look (which prints pretty nicely on soft off-white mat paper).

I even have a PS action to do it : -)

Not all stuff has to be the same.

Personally, I like a punchier B&W look (like attached below), but like experimenting with other looks also ... which in the case of the above 2 images, the clients also likes when printed.

This is a fabulous shot - I also go for punchier/high contrast B&W when it flatters

Yes - but this is a gear forum. The photoforums are elsewhere - with the images....

Indeed it is.:)

Okay, but one can't exist without the other. They're not mutually exclusive. If they were this thread would never have happened. ;)

I only wish that the ad hominem arguments wouldn't arise from differences of opinion. In my dotage, I'm asking myself if I would say certain things to the person while nose to nose; only if I were willing to risk the bloody nose that might eventuate.

Could you please describe how the SB-800 works on your M8.2? I would like to find out if and how to use my SB-800 on my M9?

Thanks.

At first I thought the sb-800 was too tight for the M8.2 but it fits fine. I set the flash to manual mode and adjust the output of the flash on the back of the sb-800. I also use the sb-800 with the nikon cable for off-camera. The sb-600 works as well but the sb-800 can work as a master to sb-600 slaves. So it works well and it's good with the M8.2. With the M9 I don't know but can't see why it wouldn't work.

Jaap,

The "fact of life" I point out here remains the same. There is no way around it as much as you or anyone else might want to dance circles around it. Sorry, it is what it is.

Having sad that, I'm happy for those who find that the M9 is the best tool for their working needs even with the hefty price tag. But, if you are an M9 purchaser, I suggest you don't exaggerate the virtues of the camera if you don't want a reaction.

Happy Shooting...

Hi there,

I totally agree with what you are saying here, as well as what you said in an earlier comment.

RFs and other Digital SLRs serve different purposes, and have different strengths and weaknesses.

Cheers.

Maybe I missed something but where is someone claiming the M9 to be what it 'ain't.'

It is what it is and costs what it costs and users must choose it to match there needs, as with any camera. The fact that some, I don't know how many, are very happy is proof that they chose well. I think that is the whole simple point of the OP.

Clearly it will not suit all users so chose wisely. It rests with 'the user', not the critic.

These little tiffs seem to always erupt when a new camera is released, regardless of the manufacturer. Users express their views, which some see as excessive and disagree. A few get indignant over the fact that others disagree with them, and so on and so on...

2 months down the track...do I dare rekindle this discussion. am now back from Africa and South America. I have loved using my M9!! It has been a wonderful wonderful tool! Some wildlife shots that I thought were down the drain as the longest lens I'd brought with me was a 50/1.4 has come up amazingly well. The full frame makes a huge difference in PP capabilities. Will post some photos soon.
