missing top screen, a solution?

I really miss the top screen. the info button is a nice add-on, but it still annoys me on a daily basis that I cannot glimpse the battery status, the remaining shots, even whether the camera is awake or not without pressing a button.

one thing that would ease my pain would be a small indicator of battery level and remaining shots in the top line on the screen above the image, so I could see with every taken image where I am. make that an optional function, so those who think the info button ist the best invention since sliced bread can switch it off.

As a professional I shoot a lot of frames. I prefer having smaller cards (4GB) and a lot of them to having only a few bigger ones, so my assistant can download them to my computer while I keep on shooting and I like to spread the risk of a damaged card.

Your idea is good, but it assumes one chimps after every shot, or at least frequently. My issue with the deletion of the top screen is that it forces me to light the rear screen to see battery condition or remaining shots, and I often shoot in theatres where doing so calls unwanted and rather negative attention to myself. In lieu of the top screen, the only alternative I could abide would be if the info were visible in the viewfinder, but I suspect there isn't room for it without cluttering it up.

Well, a minimized info screen is not a bad idea, but you would still have to hit the info button for it to show, or otherwise turn on the LCD. And the whole LCD would be running, even if mostly black, so it would be a battery drain.

But it would solve Earl and Jaap's brightness issue.

And it destroys one' s nightvision as well.

That may be true jaap, but it does allow one to see the info if really needed. With the top LCD you just can't see it in the dark unless you use a torch, which I have often done when necessary. That too can destroy night vision if you really think about it. Frankly I have never had a problem with loss of night vision when shooting shows as the stage lighting is designed to suit 'normal' vision.

I know we all encounter differing variables in such situations so a 'complete' solution may be difficult. I am ambivalent now about the loss of the LCD. Possibly a reduction in brighteness of the info screen, or better still, a selectable brightness level may be introduced with firmware updates. It's still early days with the M9. A bit more time will hopefully deliver some improvements on our various issues.

I like to glance so I like the old LCD on top where frame counters have been for ages.

Quite so. I agree. But neither the 'old' frame counters nor the LCD work very well in the dark, which is where a lot of us work (if you get the joke!). ;)

The old DMR backlight LCD (push-button to light up) is much better in this respect, as its soft green glow is quite unobtrusive. Now if they had done that to the top LCD as per M8...

I think all of us would be less inclined to rant if we understood the rationale behind the change! If it was simply impossible to fit into the new body based on other priorities taking up the space at least we would understand and perhaps even agree since they have still made it very easy to get the info. I mean, come on, a one button push to get lots of info in addition to battery status and shots used or remaining is in some ways a blessing. jmho and ymmv

Jaap, I agree that sounds fine. It may yet happen with upgrades.

Woody, you are probably right. We are all impatient with our "button pushing" skills and habits. So often we perceive it as 'one push too many.'
