devils-advocate Posted November 9, 2009 Share #27 Posted November 9, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Congratualations. Antarctica is another universe. This is a trip you'll cherish forever! That said, I really strongly urge you to take a top-end DSLR system with 70-200 and 400mm lenses. The latetr is particularly useful and effective for landscape and wildlife work there. I took my M8 to Antarctica and S.Georgia back in 2006, and found it to be a less than optimal tool for the work. You need zooms (wide and tele), multiple cameras, and a LOT of gigage. Lots of people go through 8-20GB a day there, easily. That said, I would definitely take the M9 if I went again, but specifically only for wide-angle work because I have found all DSLR wides lacking. Specifically, I would take a 24mm Elmar, and probably just leave it on the camera. Perhaps the 75mm for close-ups of penguins if they deigned to come close enough. As for weather, cold is not an issue. It is summer there. The issue is wetness. Both rain and sea-spray from zodiac trips. Keep your cameras dry! Many of the people of the LL trips who had failures took 'weather sealing' a little too literally and walked around in the rain with exposed gear. Lastly, pace yoruself. Antarctica offers such sensory overload that it is easy to loose your bearings and forget to savour the moment in person, without a camera between you and teh awe-inspiring reality you are experiencing. Remember to put the cameras down every once in a while. Enjoy! - N. http://www.luminous-landscape.com/essays/ND-m8-aa.shtml and for a more DSLR kind of view (and, partly as a consequence, I think, stronger images) see: http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/cameras/5DIIreview.shtml pps. watch the dust! Antarctica is incredibly dry and rather dusty. If you changes lenses at all, you should be cleaning daily at a minimum.Dust was a mjaor problem even on cameras with 'automatic cleaning'.
