lars_bergquist Posted November 3, 2009 Share #1 Posted November 3, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Matte tungsten bulbs are now being phased out by an ukase of the E.U. I presume that the M9's two different fluorescent white balancing presets are intended to handle this situation. I know -- real red-blooded Neanderthals shoot blind and fix it all in PP. I do wonder however if heroic PP measures is the best way. Also, M9 Jpegs have improved to a remarkable degree compared to JPEG Fine in the M8. Jonathan Slack (our worthy Jonoslack) concluded in LFI that given good exposures, it was difficult to obtain better quality with DNG and PP machinations. I think this is a real working alternative, if we can get useful white balance. We have fluorescent 'light bulbs' (Osram spiral-type Dulux El Longlife) installled in one room, and when my M9 arrived yesterday, I tried the 'Fluorescent 1' setting. The result was very yellow, yellow yellow, not reddish. Experiments with this setting plus a B+W KB 6 (80 D) colour correction filter did show promise. Is there anybody who has a M9 and a set of CC filters, and is in an exploratory mood? Oh well -- the M9 makes beautiful black-and-white at ISO 2000. But the coming holiday season does call for colour, and flash does became monotonous at times. The old man from the Age of Photofloods

fotografr Posted November 3, 2009 Share #2 Posted November 3, 2009 Have you considered using something like an Expodisc and setting your white balance manually? That's what I do and the results are excellent. WhiBal cards also work well.
lars_bergquist Posted November 3, 2009 Author Share #3 Posted November 3, 2009 Yes, that is the next experiment in line. The old man from the Age of Photofloods
chris_tribble Posted November 3, 2009 Share #4 Posted November 3, 2009 Lars - the discussion here may be of interest. http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m9-forum/101347-m9-low-light-artificial-light-white.html#post1067919 These bulbs are a major challange IMHO - and even with WhiBals and the rest of it, when they're mixed with other lights they can be a pig (especially with LR). Good news seems to be that LR3 Beta is giving much better results with this kind of image - so in a few months we should have that resource to work with... AlanJW Posted November 3, 2009 Share #5 Posted November 3, 2009 First Lars, Happy Birthday! May you remain "the old man of ____________" on the forum for many years to come. Secind, I endorse using an expodisc or failing that taking a reading off a white wall and setting a customv WB. wattsy Posted November 3, 2009 Share #6 Posted November 3, 2009 Jonathan Slack (our worthy Jonoslack) concluded in LFI that given good exposures, it was difficult to obtain better quality with DNG and PP machinations. Jono was reported as saying something like that but I don't agree with the conclusion. The M9 JPEGs are better than the M8 JPEGs and, in a pinch, they'll do just fine for most uses but it is not difficult to obtain better quality (principally detail) going via DNG.
