Just once I would like to read a discussion where someone who buys Noctilux is not told that he should of bought a 50 1.4 summilux. If he wanted a 50 1.4 Im sure he would have gotten one.

Great shots thanks for posting. I just ordered a Old Noctilux in EX + condition from KEH. yesterday for use with my M3. Im looking for a M9 but my dealer is saying not a chance of getting one until the new year. I would love to see some more sample's of the new noct and the M9. And please no one tell me I should have bought a 50 1.4 because it's better..

now I know i need to practice how to focus this lens fast and accurately

Happy Halloween! - a set on Flickr

That's something I've never been able to do with mine, particularly when shooting wide open (which is always the case with the Noctilux). It can be one of the most rewarding, but also one of the most frustrating, lenses ever made.

I don't now why but on M9 my focusing is much better than it was with M8. This shot is from my recent visit to local cemetery.

That cemetery shot is strange: The upper right corner of the picture is sharper than the rear corner of the slab, in spite of being farther away. What's this? An extreme case of reverse curvature of field? (Don't laugh -- that happened to me once with a brand new lens. Someone at the factory must have had too much sake the evening before.)

All,

I like Leica and I have many leica products including the old noctilux. To be honest, I decided to buy the new noctilux but now I won't do it anymore ; I like the sharpness but, for me, Noctilux means bokeh and softness, day (+ND filter) or night.

Be kind, this is only my opinion

That's a great selection of images, Alex. The problem I have isn't focusing per se, just focusing quickly. This is partly due to having such a shallow DOF, but it's also because the Noctilux has such a long throw.

I understand what you mean. It gets better with the practice. I definitely get better shots now than at the beginning. And for sure with M9 it is much easier, at least for me.

You are right. This was shot from very close distance and low angle. May be it is just because of the angle? I did not notice this, now I see this, but is does not bother me.

i find the shot of the grave stone and grass quite nice. is it just me, or is the bohek not as 'smooth' rather, it's gives a bit of a 'swirl' type of effect? that's what i see anyway. i heard the older 50 lux gives a similar feel to the photo.

nice set of imagery which has the razor sharp feel of the summilux's 1.4's. for me, they do personally raise the question of when and when not f0.95 (or f1 on the older nocti) is kind of appropriate to use. the shot with your son and dog together in the flower bed, for example, where 2.8 or f4 might have brought the dog's nose into focus. just my thought. nice bit of kit though i see from your self-portrait on flickr that you didn't have a skylight filter protecting the front element. i would consider that essential kit with a USD10,000 investment..even on an m9! did it require any tweaking of the rangefinder to nail the focus?

The low angle makes the effect even more strange, because it makes the distance between the plane of best focus (passing through the middle of the slab, at a slight angle to the vertical) and the grass pictured in the distance, even larger. So what happens here?

It may not bother you, but it puzzles me. I would not buy any lens, at any price, that behaved like this. The Olympus OM lens I mentioned went back to the dealer at once, and was replaced without any quibbling. It is a good lens, when assembled correctly.

It is obvious to me that the new 0,95 Noctilux shows higher contrast on full aparture compared to the old one. I have the newest (with built in sun shade) of the old 1,0 version which I use on my M8. This M9/0,95 Noctilux must be a far better combo with higher contrast, lower noise at high ISO and a larger field of view.

It is the focusing of the Noctilux which is tricky. But if you manage to focus it correctly it produces some amazing results.
