Is the M9 your go to landscape camera, or...

If you like photograph landscape without filters (like me), you have to go many times to the same place to get a nice light. You need to walk a lot and you need a light and nice equipment. For me there are just two options: Or M8 or much better the M9 with some nice leica lenses. You have to add a good portion of patience or luck to get the nice light.

So if you don`t want to use a M9 you can just use a M8 :)

I use my KB Canham 8x10 field camera, or my Arca-Swiss 4x5 system. Push come to shove the 8x10 wins.

And when the scene calls for my Cooke XVa lens I'm in heaven.

Here's a gallery of my 8x10 work: Walter P. Calahan Photography Inc.

Walt - beautiful work, and I can't argue with the kit that you use - but I wouldn't want to carry it for a day's walking - let alone a long trek. I own two camera systems (5D2 + L lenses) and M9 (this will be 2 bodies) + 18 Zeiss and Leica 21/28/35/50/90/135. I carry the Leicas everywhere. I pack the DSLR for specific jobs only - and am very pleased when I don't need long lenses. I'm just not man enough to deal with the Arca-Swiss setup... :)

I would use a 6x9 RF, this is my Fujica GSW690 III. But for walking around, the M9 with three lenses is just perfect. An example with CV Heliar 15/4.5:

Gentlemen

Can I remind you of the forum rules re placing large, externally hosted image files within posts, please. Especially outside of the photo section.

For those of us that access the forum via iPhones, Nokia thingamajigs etc, placing >3 MB of images in a post makes for a miserable experience. Last week, in Italy, that would have cost me about $18 to view just your posts ($36 if I were outside the EU)

Please have some consideration for those that are not permanently wired to broadband.

If you want to link to external file, please do so via a URL, and not an embedded image file.

And please use the Photo section to exhibit your images, made with Leica cameras or lenses, and please stick to the image size limits. The file size limit has just been updated, in case you had missed that. Thanks.

If I had a landscape job to shoot, I would use my Canon 1DSIII with my 3 TS-E lenses. I could do it with my M8 but the Canon has a 100% reflex viewfinder so it's more WYSIWYG and less shoot-chimp-reshoot especially if I chose to go old-school and use graduated filters. Since "fast ultrawide lenses" aren't required for landscape photography, there's no advantage to an M9 unless you need wider than 18mm FOV.

would you use something else for serious landscape photography? If not the M9, what would you use? Thanks for considering.

HI Frank

Yes - nearly always (I also use the FF Sony A900 sometimes). Clearly, as C_R says you'd be better to use something bigger with higher resolution t/s and a heavyweight tripod - but if you aren't there, you can't take the picture, and carrying that sort of stuff out early in the morning in difficult country is more of an effort than I want to make. Added to which, the M9 does a grand job.

I tend to use:

WATE

28 'cron

50 'lux

75 'cron

90 elmarit

All do a grand job.

What are your favorite landscape lenses, Miguel

I don't have really favourite lenses. I just use the lenses I have and I could afford. With the M8 I've been using the 15 cv, the 28 elmarit, the 50 cron and the 75 cron.

Now with the M9 I'm going to change the 15cv for the new 18mm super elmar.:)

I would love to have the 50mm summilux and the 90 cron. I like the 35 cron as well.

Normally four lenses are needed for landscape.

What I really love is to trek with my leica and lenses. There is nothing nicer and if I get a nice landscape picture that is the final prize.

Miguel,

Both you and Jono make me feel guilty about not getting out and shooting more images with the equipment I already have ... I'm surrounded by beauty here and yet mostly shoot when I travel.

I like the shot here and your slideshow immensely.
