Hi folks.

I find out critical problem with WATE original 67mm filter holder + SF24d flashing.

SF24d causes flash flare through 67mm filter holder window. (see attach pics)

So I made(order made through local camera repair shop in South Korea) 58mm filter holder without window. With using 58mm B+W Slim UV, there's no vignetting at all. I used to us 55mm filter holder(it's order made too) when I was using M8. But 55mm filter holder makes vignetting with M9(yes it's FF;))

With 58mm filter holder, the benefit is... it's perfact protecting solution for lens. No need to worry about dust, no need to worry about flash flare. Even it's smaller than original filter holder and looks cute.

I'm only using 67mm filter holder with CPL when I really need it.

Thats very inventive. The Leica 67mm adapter came with a thin donut shaped piece of card board that covers the two windows. I had that problem called Leica support only to find it in the adapter box. Your solution is elegant though.

I'm sure that (I never tried though) if I use that card board with M9, there must be big vignetting. IMHO, the best point of my solution is the size of it. :-)

... perfect where can I order it?

Dear philipp,

I made this holder at small camera repair shop in South Korea.

They have some of pipe cutting machine and have connect to annodizing fatory.

It took about 1 week to make this holder.

I hope you could find out some place like I found.

Do you remember guys summer 2007...?

The 67mm IR/UV has a different formula especially designed for ultra wide angle lenses (WATE) If my memory is good, I think Sean Reid confirmed this. When you use the glass of the Leica 49mm IR/UV (or B+W # 486 and/or # 489) with the Milich adapter, you can get occasionally red corners at 16mm and 18mm on the M8 (I do get them).

Using the Leica 67mm filter with the adapter (not very beautiful on the M8/M9, I agree), I don't get red corners on the M8...

So, IMHO, if you're using a standard 58mm IR filter, I suppose you can get also red corners... and even more with the M9 because it's full frame and Leica's firmware corrections are made for the Leica 67mm formula.

I forgot... the Leica adapter has a black plastic ring to insert between the filter and the adapter. The reason of this plastic ring is to avoid the reflection of the letters in front of the lens into the filter. The original plastic ring masks completely the inscription in front of the WATE, so its reflection on the filter glass is not possible. If you don't use the plastic ring, you can get some weird artifacts on the pictures (it looks like a clock -there's a thread here about this phenomenon with some examples but I'm too lazy to look for it now).

I DO like how your filter holder looks like and the idea to have a smaller thing in front of the lens (WATE) but I'm sure you'll find out the problems I mentioned here.

Best regards,

.

Hello.

I used to use all of filter holder solutions. Original 67mm, one bought from NY(maybe this is the Milich adapter I guess), and order made 55mm filter holder like this.

In my experience, I get red corners in direct lighting(especially against the sun) condition too with all of filter solution. It's, of course include original 67mm filter solution with either card board nor no card board.

And I don't use any UV/IR filter anymore with my M9. I took many test shots in many lighting situation. And I just decided that it's not needed UV/IR filter anymore. So I didn't tried with UV/IR and couldn't tell about with that.

But now with my solution, I can say it's perfectly OK for everything in my purpose. No vignetting at all. No red corner(because I don't use UV/IR) No flase flare anymore. And perfactly protect front lens from dust and etcs.

Of course this is not an official solution and maybe wrong in someway. But I'll post something if I find out some critical problem with my solution too. :D

Yes, you're absolutely right! You don't need IR filters on the M9... I was thinking on the M8. I completely forgot that. Alzheimer I suppose... Tssss... :D

Yes, the one you ordered in NY, it's probably John Milich adapter (very nice guy. I met him twice at his workshop in Brooklyn).

As I said before, my mistake because you don't need IR filters with the M9.

No it's not Alzheimer's. You probably read Leica's official statement that says bascially the M9 is still sensitive to IR in certain situations. In my experience it still needs IR filters under some conditions, albeit nowhere near the issue it is with the M8. It's now a matter of how discerning the photographer and/or client is. The majority of M9 buyers probably won't even notice. I might not have cared either, if I hadn't compared shots side by side with a current and last-generation Canon dslr.

From this photo, we can tell what a 67mm filter holder supplied with a WATE will do to FF, vignetting.

M7 + WATE + Velvia 100 + 67mm filter holder and B+W UV

Wookchang,

Did you remove the plastic ring from the original Leica filter? I think vignetting could happen with the plastic ring on a full frame analog camera. Though, I suppose on the M9 the firmware will correct vignetting...

In fact I never tried WATE with film but I'm pretty sure that is just normal itself vignetting of WATE not caused by 67mm filter holder.

Once I used to use M8, I made same style filter holder for 55mm and it was OK with M8. But in M9, that filter holder solution(55mm) causes filter vignetting. (it's more like hardware vignetting not just lens vignetting) That is why I made 58mm filter holder again. It never gives me a vignetting at all.

Here I attach M9+55mm filter holder pics. It shows hardware vignetting at corners. (WATE at 16mm)

I did not try without a plastic insert that blocks the hole.

Without a plastic insert I see objects behind me casting own colors on the inside of a filter.

For example, if there is a tree standing behind me, it will throw green color casting on the inside of a filter and therefore, I have a picture with greenish color cast.

Anyway, the 67mm filter holder is really ugly to my taste, and I think hodohodo''s custom-made the 58mm holder looks real nice.
