mipstoo Posted October 29, 2009 Share #1 Posted October 29, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi everybody So I checked my new M4 more into detail and the only thing that I found that doesn't seem to be entirely correct is the shutter speed. Especially the longer ones seem to be off and a bit slower (not that much) Is there any way to repair this by myself. I've already been looking for a M4 service manual but they are hard to find, also information about the M4. Lots of stuff (not the repair manual though) on the M3 and I guess it must be pretty much the same. Already been to my local Leica dealer and there are 3 options: - Send it to Leica for CLA and repair: expensive - Send it to their repair man (not Leica) but not before beginning of December - Do it myself Anybody experienced with the subject and some recommendations? Is it possible to do it myself for now and do the (cheaper) CLA afterwards? I'd appreciate your opinions Mipstoo

aesop Posted October 29, 2009 Share #2 Posted October 29, 2009 ...if one of my M cameras was in need of a CLA, I would send it away for one. I would *not* attempt to do it myself. But that's just me.
Rolo Posted October 29, 2009 Share #3 Posted October 29, 2009 Wouldn't know how to go about it myself, but I think the benefit of a service is the feel of a new camera on it's return. So, don't look at it as fixing the speeds, but preparing it for another 35 years use. I had an M3 done and it hadn't been opened in 50 years. There are many technician's who can CLA a Leica and if Solms is more expensive then I'd happily go elsewhere. Name your location and someone here will have a favourite repairer on hand. firststream Posted October 29, 2009 Share #4 Posted October 29, 2009 Here is a list of technicians that you may find helpful. Who knows, they may even help you over the phone with the adjustments. Better, they may explain the folly of trying to do this at home: http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=65581
mipstoo Posted October 29, 2009 Author Share #5 Posted October 29, 2009 Well preferably I would like to service it in Belgium. I already found some adresses in the Netherlands which is an option but still... So if anybody knows a good adress in Belgium, would be great. earleygallery Posted October 29, 2009 Share #6 Posted October 29, 2009 Given the price you paid you can swallow the cost of a CLA and its still a bargain. I would advise against sending it to Leica, they are very expensive and I doubt they'll be quick with their current workloads! Why not call some Leica dealers in Belgium, most will know a repairer. Doc Henry Posted October 29, 2009 Share #7 Posted October 29, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) According to me, it's better you send it to Solms in the general revision, Solms saw that speed must be reviewed and they made ! I did it with my Leicaflex SL last september : it works perfectly now http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-collectors-historica/97395-i-am-sad.html
stunsworth Posted October 29, 2009 Share #8 Posted October 29, 2009 Malcolm Taylor and CRR in the UK can service the camera. My experience with Malcolm has been excellent, and he's done restoration work for Leica themselves in the past. I'm afraid I've no idea of anyone in Belgium who could do the service, someone else might be able to help you there.
E.M Posted October 29, 2009 Share #9 Posted October 29, 2009 Maybe you can give De Beuckelaer a call. Or you could go to one of those demo-days in a Leica shop and talk to people. There is one soon at Cinebel photo in Wavre ( 010 22 23 41). In Antwerp ( Merksem) at Rembrandt photo on sat. 21-11-09. When I had a problem, also shutterspeed with my M6, I drove to Solms for 2 days, saw it as a little holiday. Dropped the camera at the factory and picked it up the next day. jhild Posted November 1, 2009 Share #10 Posted November 1, 2009 it´s possible to do it DIY but you need some special tools plus experience. If you know about the M3 then there isn´t much of a difference with the M4. However, if you havn´t done DIY´s on M cameras before you better invest the money and leave it to a pro.
