Advertisement Posted October 28, 2009 Posted October 28, 2009 Hi michali, Take a look here Isn't it great how boring the M9 forum has become?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
ChrisC Posted October 28, 2009 Share #22 Posted October 28, 2009 Chris - It is a really positive sign that this forum is so boring; many of us remember the energy coursing through the other place when the dooda hit the fan after the release of the M8. I'm glad that the M9 has proved that it was ready for release and that Leica aren't running in circles chasing their tails as they did with the M8. The really good thing to come out of this is that Leica now has the time to improve the wretchedly innaccurrate image framing of the 'M' viewfinder, the absurd and distracting 'twinned' framelines, and the anachronistic bolt-on, bolt-off magnifiers and dioptre corrections. That's what I'd like to see; a radically modern rangefinder viewfinder that is fit for the mid 1970s. Lights blue touch paper. Retires chuckling to the safety of the M8 Forum. ............... Guest BigSplash Posted October 28, 2009 Share #23 Posted October 28, 2009 Chris it is really nice to see an expert photographer like you so happy with the M9...from all I read it seems that Leica have a winner, and have done a superb job. It would be ridiculous as an M8 owner to throw rocks at the M9 as it is a masterpiece of technology, and design that is today's best "fit for purpose camera" from what I can see. However is it really not the case that there are a few things beyond the three you list that need fixing? I have understood that there remains: Firmware fix for shutter issue Red line issue on left for 18mm lens ...or is that actually a hardware fix due to misalignment of the sensor. Corner fix issue, which can be compensated for with special post production software. Many requested items (since M8) that remain unaddressed...some people suggest at least 10 items. Hopefully M10 will address these. ...meanwhile I hope you continue to use your new friend and make those superb images.
piero Posted October 28, 2009 Share #24 Posted October 28, 2009 I would advise that all future improvements be made on the M9 an that the M9 remains upgradable to whatever mpx they will arrive to. What sense would it have to come out with an M10 leaving the M9 owners without the possibility to upgrade...

Certainly it would be reasonable that M9 owners should benefit from firmware upgrades...just like I hope as a new M8 owner (July 09) I shall enjoy firmware upgrades for the shutter issue, and features such as manual lens select, and ISO select, and monitors view of battery status, number of images taken etc. However I guess it is too much to ask Leica to retrofit into the M9: The Maestro chips set, A next generation sensor Shave off 3mm on the casing to be similar in size to a M7 (I know that the lens mount has to stick out slightly for this to be achieved). Plus ...all the other niggles that have been identified.

Frank really you are getting quite silly. You suggest an angle grinder and call me silly..........Hmmm. Actually several people much more knowledgeable than me and it seems you have looked at reducing the M8/M9 footprint on the basis of higher integration with a more recent chip set. The 3mm reduction looks as I understand it very possible . It would give a look and feel similar to the M7. ...which is much admired here. The main issue is the distance from the M lens mount to the sensor and that would require the mount to stick out from the body by 3mm just at the lens. BerndReini Posted October 28, 2009 Share #29 Posted October 28, 2009 Actually several people much more knowledgeable than me and it seems you have looked at reducing the M8/M9 footprint on the basis of higher integration with a more recent chip set. I haven't heard about this, but people keep forgetting how highly specialized the chip set for the M8 and M9 are due to the short distance of the lenses from the sensor. Some people think Kodak are stupid and Leica should just buy a Sony sensor and slap it into an M camera the size of an M7 or better an MP. Let's see how long it takes another company to build a full-frame digital camera with a good viewfinder that is smaller than the M9.
piero Posted October 28, 2009 Share #30 Posted October 28, 2009 Er let me think, sell more cameras?............. this logic will come to an end, sooner or later. Think of how many more customers they would get if there was a guarantee that you can keep your camera and upgrade when new feature come along. I never bought a MKl or MKll or MKlll, I rent them. I buy lenses. Beacuse I know they come out whit a new model every two years.

The last time Leica did that it was a commercial failure leading to the end of the R line. The DMR. Leica was not the only culprit. The DMR was 4.800 Euro and the M8 4.200 Euros.
