Last time I was there was in 1972... :)

The Christo Rei statue just across the very impressive bridge is worth a visit if you have time - like Rio without the beach distractions ;)

The old medieval prison on the waterfront is also very interesting. I forget its name (Edit: Image:Torre de Belem 1.JPG - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia), but it's on all the tourist brochures - don't let that put you off.

There are some great viewpoints over the city from the hills above, IIRC.

There's a huge square in tne middle of the city.

The traffic was absolutely manic when I was there.

Don't drink the Rose.

:)

There is nothing to add. I did it the same way last summer - great day, unfortunately a little bit to hot. For the evening: stay at the old quarter (bairro alto), eat some grilled fish (dourade or espada) and look for some amateur-fado clubs like the "Tasco do Chico" (Rua Diário de Noticias 39)...

Good luck, Alex

Hi Bill,

Lisbon is a beautiful city and as we have close friends who live there we tend to go quite often. I agree with the above posts, and in particular taking one of the old trams up to Castillo Sao Jorge is worth the trip, then have a coffee overlooking the city (some great photographic opportunities at every corner) and walk down. The terracotta rooftops and domed churches are very photogenic, as are the wonderfully coloured and tiled buildings you will see everywhere. Another place worth a visit is the Expo centre near the airport which has an excellent aquarium.

If you are travelling out of the city (the trains are excellent, clean and reliable) it's worth visiting Cascais - a beautiful coastal town about 15 miles west of Lisbon, Ginchu beach, and travelling north about 20 miles to Sintra, a town in the hills with Pene Palace, a very colourful hilltop castle.

Food is great, especially the fish dishes (sardines are a must) and the pastries in the many small coffee houses. Our friends who live in Portugal advised us that if weren't sure which wine to buy, choosing one from the Alentejo region was usually a good bet.

Have a great trip!

All the best,

Dan
