amoz Posted October 26, 2009 Share #1 Posted October 26, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just wanted to share a thought. With the need to keep the M-look as simple as possible, and with the availability of current generation rugged touch screens (eg as used in Garmin GPS handhelds), it seems like the obvious next step to me that Leica would incorporate such a screen on its digital M and get rid of all buttons on the back. erl Posted October 26, 2009 Share #2 Posted October 26, 2009 I fear that would flick us into the 'menu driven' syndrome, ala Canikon!

Yes and no. Great thing about the acoustic buttons such as ISO button is that your finger knows where it is in the dark and it responds immediately. iPhone screens are great, but they take time to get ready, shut down or get non-responsive from time to time. And one more thing: They glow in dark.
giordano Posted October 26, 2009 Share #4 Posted October 26, 2009 I've yet to meet a touchscreen that works flawlessly, let alone I'd trust to keep working for ten or twenty years. On the other hand one would be able to make menu selections with one's nose or tongue, which would be a big advantage.

Marty Posted October 26, 2009 Share #6 Posted October 26, 2009 My Sony Handycam has a touch screen and it is a pain to use. Some buttons only react to the firm tap of a fingernail. Same on my touch screen phone, and it's not accurate. It seems the iPhone doesn't score too bad. However I believe there is a minimum screen size for effective touch control and those on the backs of 35mm cameras are just too small. Give me real hardware buttons any time. dpattinson Posted October 26, 2009 Share #7 Posted October 26, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) It would make life very difficult for all the left-eye shooters, if the nose-smudges they leave on my M8 screen are any indication
40mm f/2 Posted October 26, 2009 Share #8 Posted October 26, 2009 changing some settings with your nose during shooting will be a lot of fun:D I would be more interested if a camera can interact in realtime with something like an iphone including GPS functions. I hoped AMOLED screens will be implemented this year (higher contrast, less energy, faster response time, larger viewing angle). As I see it screen quality is much more essential for live view. I see a lot of negative comments about live view but I like the principle a lot especially for shift lenses and macro if not limited by the output device. stunsworth Posted October 26, 2009 Share #9 Posted October 26, 2009 I would be more interested if a camera can interact in realtime with something like an iphone including GPS functions. There are already apps to do this - though not in real time - look for 'Trails' in the app store.

I also think it would add unecessary cost to the camera. To be any use it would have to be capacitive screen with a fast enough processor for it to be fluid. The only useful function I can see from it being touch would be a pinch to zoom. Otherwise, I'd prefer they focus on a higher resolution display. As mentioned before, dedicated buttons make for faster operation.

As long as there would be a menu item: Nose Recognition ON/OFF
