AnakChan Posted October 27, 2009 Share #21 Posted October 27, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've lived in Japan for the past 9.5-10 yrs. Despite being a country usually in the forefront of technology, I personally feel a lot of Japanese ppl like to burst out of conformity (i.e the salaryman image) and like to test creativity in various aspects. There's some nostalgia to film photography and those who do carry the film cameras present a very arty kinda image. Admittedly I'm into that myself (although I do away with the hat and checkered vest image). Personally, there's something nice about choosing the film for the colours (e.g. Velvia vs Provia vs Sensia vs Elitechrome vs Extachrome; or in B & W slide Agfa Scala 200X - I don't really shoot negs)...then taking the photo with the right lens/settings and environment. Japan is on my bucket list of places to see and photograph. Gawd how I want to see Kyoto and the northern reaches of Japan, especially the coastal areas (sigh)... jjjjuin Posted November 2, 2009 Share #24 Posted November 2, 2009 I'm a chinese but I have couple of Japanese friends. generally, japanese people like old style stuff. Although High-tech is highly deleloping in Japan, but meanwhile they keep the old traditional buildings, cultures, and fashions. It's not hard to see old wood buildings in Japan. Like the food, sushi and other seafood, they actually taste the same as hundreds yeas ago. If we say fashion, You will see japanese ladies wear kemono and walk on the street even today. You will find a phenominon in Japan, which is everything is highly developed there, but they always keep the old side. Japanese culture is the most interesting one I've read. There're two books worth to read if you wanna know this country. I can't find the english name but directly translate from Chinese, the books are <daisy and blade>, another one is <sakura and blade>. excuse my poor english here. Let's back to film camera, think by the same logics, it's easy to find the answer.
Jeff Fillmore Posted November 3, 2009 Share #25 Posted November 3, 2009 I have quite a few Japanese contacts on Flickr who I admire very much- who all seem to shoot film. I guess they like it for the same reason I do- it's so cool!
