M8 using Lightroom 3 beta

A thread from Chris in the M9 forum demonstrates the improved color profile (red tones in skin, for example) for the M9 in Lightroom 3 beta versus LR 2.5. Has anyone seen results on the M8/8.2 using LR2.5 versus Lightroom 3 beta? I wonder if the improvements, so far, are specific to the M9 only, given the newness of its profiles.

Guess we won't know for sure until the product is officially released, but just curious.

I've tried it and am very pleased. Its free so give it a shot yourself.

If you "import" shots you've already used in an earlier version of Lightroom, LR3 takes the adjustments and displays using the "old" DNG process. To see the changes you need to select "Settings->Update To Current Process Version." The differences are subtle but real. Particularly in shadows. I've got a bunch of shots of theater scenes, I've always had problems with the "blotchy" noise in the dark wings. My fix was to boost contrast to drive the noise below the "black" floor. The new process renders very nice "grainy" noise that allows me to reduce contrast and gain back some of the shadow image.

I'll be happy when LR3 goes final.

does this serve as a better solution than Aperture and Nik plugins? Esp. for noisy images?

Not sure if you're referring to LR in general, or to the LR 3 beta version in particular. Can't offer opinions on the latter, but LR versus Aperture is probably like asking about Canon vs Nikon. Each camp has its followers, and each probably serves its users well. I'm very pleased with LR, although I don't really deal much with noisy images given my shooting style.

The new process doesn't eliminate noise like Nik, but rather renders it in a more pleasing manner, you still need to use the separate noise reduction tools in LR to "smooth" the noise out. (BTW, I don't think that Aperture does an particularly spectacular noise reduction, its similar to what you can do with the LR tools.)

The "new process" really just makes the images more "film like" in its noise rendering (think grain).

I'm getting fantastic results using LR3 and my M8 images that were shot with high ISO. I am getting the same kind of results you see from mn4367 on his thread: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m9-forum/103927-another-opinion-m9-high-iso-images.html

It takes a little PP with the appropriate LR sliders to get the same effect, but when the LR3 camera presets/camera profiles come out for the M8 I think people are going to be surprised at how capable the M8 is at 640 and 1280. Very usable now.

padraigm,

It is good news! Glad I kept the M8. I have to say that I've got more enjoyment out of this camera.

I've been looking at the noise reduction section of the develop module and comparing it to LR2 and LR3 is quite a big improvement in this area. It is really tuned to getting out the blue and magenta blobs that show up at higher ISO. And, I would describe the final effect as having a nice grain look rather than a plastic look. Very nice upgrade.

Good news indeed. I use CS3 instead of LR. I hope Adobe will transfer the improvements to Bridge...

Cheers

Could someone please post the differences up? I am now using LR3 beta and fail to see the differences. To be honest however, I don't really shot high ISO so may not be the best candidate for a software upgrade. I am happy with Aperture 2 at the moment + NIK plugins.

Thanks,

RickLeica, about 4 messages above, has a link to a post that has some of the variances shown. The impact is seen at 640 and above (if you look really hard in shadowed sections of 320 shots, you may see changes). I've got 2 picture below that show 100% peeps at images I shot at 640.

First is LR2 process and second is LR3. Looking at them as posted, its hard to tell the difference (JPG processing probably). I'll scare up some 2500 shots and post them.

mikki, where are you seeing the banding in those shots?

I'd like to point out that the differences I'm seeing are when the noise reduction sliders are applied. I see very little change in the RAW processing alone. I'm having to add the noise reduction myself to get the "big" effect I'm seeing.

I wonder if the M9 developing is automatically adding NR to higher ISO images? It would seem from the photo's posted, that I mentioned before, were not tweaked for NR by the OP. The effect, it seems, was right out of the processor.

By the way, LR3b is doing a great job with my Canon files as well. The difference is that from a noise standpoint the Canon files start out much cleaner to begin with.

I'm using LR3 and think it's great. I've created a preset that mimics my favourite M8 setting: black and white jpeg with standard sharpening and high contrast. I've never been able to convince C1 to reproduce the look of in-camera B&W jpegs from DNGs.

Anyway, if anyone wants to try it, I've uploaded it here:

Two quick questions:

a) Can I load LR3 in addition to LR2, so I can use either?

B) If I work on an image in LR3, and then open it in LR2.5, will there be any problem?

I assume that I need to create a new catalog for LR3, and keep them both up to date for a while. Does LR3 expire on a certain date or a certain number of uses?

He might refer to this (curves adjusted to make it easier visible):
