Herb Sennet Posted October 24, 2009 Share #1 Posted October 24, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) From my Leica CL I borrowed the Summicron-C 40mm and put it on the new Panasonic Lumix GF-1 with the adapter ring. Amazing quality from a 35 year old lens on a new small camera that is a real joy to use. Shot RAW from tripod at ISO100 and f/8. Focussed on the red dots of the lower mini apple. Imported in Lightroom as DNG. Did a little white balance and some sharpening for the web that's all. This is a real gem to carry along your Leica and use almost any old and new Leica lens you can find. Greetings, Herb. Welcome, dear visitor! Herb Sennet Posted October 24, 2009 Author Share #2 Posted October 24, 2009 Forgot...somewhat closer The real size of this little apple is 45 mm in diameter. Herb. Welcome, dear visitor! Herb Sennet Posted October 24, 2009 Author Share #3 Posted October 24, 2009 One shot more with the also 35 years old Leica Elmar-C 90mm f/4 and the Panny GF-1 of course. This sharp is hard to get with current non-Leica lenses. I am pleasantly amazed:) Herb. The real size of this leaf is 65 mm in length. Welcome, dear visitor! wilfredo Posted October 24, 2009 Share #4 Posted October 24, 2009 That lens is a good performer. Have fun with your new camera and the re-discovery of your lens. There are non-Leica lenses with exceptional sharpness but it looks like you will be doing just fine. Cheers!
hammam Posted October 24, 2009 Share #5 Posted October 24, 2009 Nice. Don't sell the Summicron 40. I did, and I've regretted it since. A jewel of a lens. BTW, how do you like the GF-1? I had the G1 for a while, and I thought it had rather poor dynamic range. So, I sold it.
Herb Sennet Posted October 24, 2009 Author Share #6 Posted October 24, 2009 The CF-1 is a marvel so far. In operation and in quality. I am still looking for the electronic viewfinder for handheld shooting. The dynamic range seems just a hair short of my EOS40D. Not bad. I am more or less a macro specialist working with all the Canon macro gear on a regular base. However these Leica CL "kit" lenses in combination with the GF-1 are excellent. Their seconde hand prices are ridiculous low for their performance. The only drawback is the cropfactor of 2x. Wishing for Leica lenses shorter than 18mm. Thanks and greetings, Herb. Nick De Marco Posted October 24, 2009 Share #7 Posted October 24, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am loving the GF1 too. Most fun I have had with a camera for a long time. especially using old Leica (and new CV, and also the 20mm Panny) lenses. Seeing as you have such attractive apples there, I could not help re-posting a couple of mine taken with the beautiful old Leica Summilux 50mm f1.4 M, first version, wide open (from my Pimping my Panny thread http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/digital-forum/102674-pimping-my-panny.html) Nick
leicanut2 Posted October 27, 2009 Share #8 Posted October 27, 2009 Not bad, this thread made me order the DMW-MA2M adapter. I want to try a old tele elmar 135mm on the gf1 just for fun. Cheers Jan
Herb Sennet Posted October 27, 2009 Author Share #9 Posted October 27, 2009 Good idea Jan! The 135 must be working very well on the Panny. The only issue I found was working with real wide angles like the VC 15mm. In de righthand corners I got maze artifacts. This is a software issue. Lightroom 2.5 and even 3 Beta are not getting this straight. Found Raw Developer as the best raw converter for the Panny. Almost no corner issues, just a fraction more noise instead of the maze artifacts. One more shot with the Elmar-C 90 mm of €199 secondhand. All the best, Herb Welcome, dear visitor! leicanut2 Posted October 28, 2009 Share #10 Posted October 28, 2009 I should get the adapter in 2 weeks. I will try and post a 135mm picture. That would be a 270mm on the Panny should be interesting Cheers Jan
Herb Sennet Posted October 28, 2009 Author Share #11 Posted October 28, 2009 With the Voigtlander Super Wide - Heliar 15mm f/4.5 II one has to make some extra effort to have good results. Only f/11 provides reasonable good corner sharpness and only Raw Developer gives no visible maze artifacts. At 100% there is only slight evidence in the right hand corners. Here is one example with this CV 15 processed in Raw Developer. To be honest it is quite amazing quiality for this handsome combination. Greetings to all, Herb. Welcome, dear visitor! Herb Sennet Posted October 28, 2009 Author Share #12 Posted October 28, 2009 The Panny GF-1 with the Summicron-C 40 mm f/2 attached with adapter ring DMW-MA2M. The Leica CL of 1974 with the new Voigtlander Super Wide-Heliar 15 mm f/4.5 II. And the Elmar-C 90 mm f/4. The Heliar and the Summicron act as 30 mm and 80 mm respectively on the GF-1. A lovely and universal set within a nice budget Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! leicanut2 Posted October 28, 2009 Share #13 Posted October 28, 2009 Herb, The GF1 View finder is not as good as the screen BUT it saves alot on battery power. When you push the button on the viewfinder the camera screen goes dark. That I also like because if you take it to stage shows or places where they frown on cameras it does not light up and disturb everyone around you. I like it. Price could be better I paid 199.00 pluss few bucks for shipping. Did you get ithe GF1 with the 20mm or the 14-45mm? The 20mm is a gem. Looking for a 14-45 and now the Leica c 40 and 90mm. Cheers Jan
Herb Sennet Posted October 28, 2009 Author Share #14 Posted October 28, 2009 Now a real 100% crop! of the GF-1/Summicron-C 40mm shot from tripod in daylight at f/5.6 and ISO 100. Below the full frame. Raw converted to DNG, then developed in Raw Developer. Tried to make the best result I could; a little brightness and color correction and a bit sharpening for web posting. Just amazing quality! Try for yourself while waiting for your M9. That is the camera you will need to improve on this. I mean I hope it will Herb. Welcome, dear visitor! I just like to use the manual Leica lenses. Altough the 45 macro and the 7-14 zoom look interesting to me. Greetings! Herb
dhsimmonds Posted October 28, 2009 Share #16 Posted October 28, 2009 Try for yourself while waiting for your M9. That is the camera you will need to improve on this. I mean I hope it will ;)Herb. You would probably only see a difference at large print sizes and not at web resolution. The GF1 really is an amazing little camera though, especially with Leica glass. The GF1 really is an amazing little camera though, especially with Leica glass. Hi Dave, Thanks for posting. You are right! Comparing picture quality on the web is rather useless. Expecting that most people won't be printing larger than 13"x19" (32,9x48,3 cm) it will be really difficult to see any difference at all in practice. And if there will be a difference it will probably not be of any real importance for the message that is communicated by the picture. Anyhow, indeed an amazing and lovely camera. Inspiring and liberating I would say, and that is more than we could hope for. Cheers, Herb

Herb Sennet Posted October 29, 2009 Author Share #20 Posted October 29, 2009 One more image with the CF-1 and the Summicron-C 40 mm at ISO 3200. Shot from tripod 1/200 s at f/5.6 just after sunset. It was a very dark and grey autumn day. The shot was also almost 1 stop underexposed. However I took 9 the same shots as RAW (no noise reduction), stacked them in PhotoAcute and removed some more traces of noise with the Photoshop plug-in Neat Image. The original image (below) has a lot of color and luminance noise. In fact it was useless to me in this situation. But with the mentioned process you will get an acceptable image (top). This stacking for removing noise can of course also be done in Photoshop. Cheers, Herb Welcome, dear visitor!
