pgk Posted October 23, 2009 Share #1 Posted October 23, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'd be interested to hear whether M9 users are finding the increased bit depth of its files to be a significant improvement over the M8 files. I'm getting very good results out of my M8 and am still learning (having had it for 2 years) its tonal and colour nuances and editing limitations. The M9 appeals for two simple reasons; wider field of view on my existing lenses, and increased bit depth. The first reason is self explanatory but I'm interested to know whether users are finding the increased bit depth to be a major advantage, a sometimes useful one or whether it is not a big deal at all? pgk Posted October 24, 2009 Author Share #2 Posted October 24, 2009 Surely someone can comment - there was so much discussion about the M8 ONLY being 8-bit and how 'bad' that was?
luigi bertolotti Posted October 24, 2009 Share #3 Posted October 24, 2009 There are some running threads that, between many others tech discussions, touch the question of bit depth: one is this http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m9-forum/102531-do-you-get-better-pictures-your.html And another is this : http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m9-forum/103042-m9-has-indeed-one-stop-advantage.html The issue intrigues me too : I haven't yet ordered a M9, nor decided to do it, and me too am far to have mastered well all the capabilities to process my M8 files; my general mood is that the 14 bit color depth has yet to be exploited completely by Leica, probably for a certain "rush" to have a stable firmware... I think that they will make some positive enhancement in firmware in coming months. Add to this the fact that M9 raw developers are probably in similar situation (I have red here that a new release of Lightroom is just on the way), and one can conclude that the higher color depth, as the moment, has not yet emerged as a significant improvement over M8: but I am confident that it will be like that: color transitions , in certain pictures, are an important element of the final rendering, and higher color depth must be an add-on in such situations. pgk Posted October 24, 2009 Author Share #4 Posted October 24, 2009 Thanks Luigi I' followed the thread you linked too - but I am surprised that there isn't more given the furore about the M8 saving 8-bit files!
luigi bertolotti Posted October 24, 2009 Share #5 Posted October 24, 2009 I can add also that higher color depth is a feature that is little apt to be evidenced in web-posted pictures... and, on prints, it probably needs a well tuned printing workflow to be exploited. ho_co Posted October 25, 2009 Share #6 Posted October 25, 2009 Remember, Leica said with the M8 that there wasn't any noticeable difference. And in the Reichmann M9 intro interview, Stefan implies that the uncompressed format was offered in the M9 simply due to the countless earlier requests. Maybe Leica gave it to us and we found out that they were right to start with?
