mikki Posted October 23, 2009 Share #1 Posted October 23, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello people, Recently, I saw a reasonably priced tele-elmarit 135mm at a leica dealer. I just wondered if this lens can be used on the M8, I mean, with those goggles. I imagine they enlarge the picture that comes into the VF, but what happens to the framelines? Advertisement Posted October 23, 2009 Posted October 23, 2009 Hi mikki, Take a look here 135 Tele-Elmarit with Goggles. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
swamiji Posted October 23, 2009 Share #2 Posted October 23, 2009 Works fine for me, Great lens. Uses 90mm frame lines. The goggles adjust the difference between 135mm and 90mm...
mikki Posted October 23, 2009 Author Share #3 Posted October 23, 2009 Wow, that looks really convenient, as the M8 has no 135mm lines :-) Do you find it heavy? How is the picture quality?
guidowi Posted October 23, 2009 Share #4 Posted October 23, 2009 Wow, that looks really convenient, as the M8 has no 135mm lines :-) Do you find it heavy? How is the picture quality? This is the quality on M8, and full open!
canus Posted October 23, 2009 Share #5 Posted October 23, 2009 wow, very nice guidowi, thanx for posting that pic. Hopefully, I should be receiving my M8 next week, and I'm deciding which glass to get. I think I'll start with a 50mm of some kind, not exactly sure which one yet though, and eventually I want a nice wide lens, perhaps a 21mm, but, later on the 135mm for sure after that picture you just supplied. How is the picture quality? guidowi thanks for the great photo... Yes the lens is really that good. Heavy, yes, but manageable. The only difficulty is if you use a hand grip, you need to remove it before putting on the lens.
farnz Posted October 23, 2009 Share #7 Posted October 23, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Mikki, Beware of separation of the elements if it's an older version. The Canada balsam used to glue the elements together deteriorates over time and in some instances can turn milky, which will show up as haze or fogging. I advise you to check thoroughly before you buy. Pete.
epand56 Posted October 25, 2009 Share #8 Posted October 25, 2009 Mikki, if you look for sharpness you could also think of a Tele-Elmar 135/4 This is an amazing lens.
vla Posted October 25, 2009 Share #9 Posted October 25, 2009 i got a very reasonably priced tele-elmar 4.0 earlier this year. it's a great lens. obviously, focusing is not as easy as with a 35mm lens but with a little practice one get's used to it ... enclosed a sample shot from this summer ... http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/nature-wildlife/103595-having-papaya-break.html markus
john_newell Posted October 25, 2009 Share #10 Posted October 25, 2009 In my experience, having used them all from the f/4.5 Hektor on, the only advantage offered by the Elmarit is the goggles, since some kind of VF magnification is mandatory for accurate focusing in the .72x or less VFs, at least at f/2.8 and probably f/4.0. But, I think that sharp focus trumps unsharp focus without regard to the differences in image quality in the Leitz 135mm lenses, since theoretical image quality is irrelevant if it isn't properly focused. Howevver, you can get viewfinder magnification without resorting to the goggles, which are also IME a huge PITA in a camera bag.
