21mm Zeiss, CV or Leica pre asph?

Mark, here is a B/W sample in a "contrasty" light situation.

IMO the Zeiss has got a higher micro-contrast, but it handles really well contrasty scenes (i.e. macro contrast not too strong).

I have the Zeiss 21/2.8 and it is a great lens on the M8. My copy needed to be adjusted for focus by DAG, as it was not sharp at infinity. Turns out it front focused by 6 inches at its closest setting. The adjustment was cheap enough and the lens is now razor sharp at all distances. If I had to do it again, I might opt for the Zeiss 21/4.5 as it would block less of the finder.

This shot was taken before the lens was adjusted.

I use the CV on my m8 and it has been a great lens. I don't see any softness in the corners (maybe due to the crop) and I don't use an accessory viewfinder. I find that the edges of the viewfinder are like using a SLR with a 95% viewfinder. Will try to post a pic and a crop

Thank you for the comments and photos. I thought I was pretty settled on which way to go but these images certainly show the capability of these lenses. I think if the CV was a f2.8, I would jump on it right now. Its so small and discreet. The Zeiss is obviously in the middle in terms of size and cost. A though decision.

Thank you everyone for your comments and photos. After looking at the wonderful images both here and on other galleries, I have decided to go for the Elmarit pre asph. The gracious drawing of the lens seems to suits my style of shooting and processing work much better.

Happy shooting!

Mark, we have drizzling weather today so I shot the remainders of our breakfast table this morning. At least you can see how the Elmarit 21pre performs in contrast light.

This is a M8 in camera jpeg set to middle-high contrast.

Good luck, a good decision indeed, specially because it's based on your specific needs.:)

Maurizio,

Your comments and photos were very helpful in the decision making process. You certainly put that Zeiss to good use. The first lens that got me hooked into Leica M gear is the 50 summilux pre asph. And the smoothness of the 21 elmarit seems to resemble it. I think it fits my photographic dna. Thanks again.

Maarten, thanks for posting this photo. This image confirms why I love the way this lens draws, especially in black and white. Buttery smooth with a delicate touch. Just ordered mine from Camera West and should have it sometime next week.
