One place to look for that is where you log in:

Check the 'remember me' box, and Bob's your uncle.

Moderator, please, explain me why the LUF never REMEMBERS my user name and password, despite the option being duly checked when I log in.

And I don't understand why I am constantly automatically logged out if I remain unactive for like 5 minutes. I mean, I don't even have time to just compose a lengthy post.

Also, why is it that in «Hybrid mode» I get only a few posts per page, though I have checked 200 posts in my «Options», AND why is it that when I click on «More depth below current page» nothing happens? I'm stuck with the same 15 posts per page. I mean, «Linear mode» gives you posts in chronological order and «Threaded mode» gives you one post per page. Is there a «Satisfactory mode», one that would simply give you, maybe, 30 posts per page, then would give you page numbers at the bottom so that you can continue reading other posts?

I don't understand how the LUF is designed.

I am sorry, but I've spent years fighting these idiosyncrasies of the site rather than just enjoying it.

Thank you.

Not a mod. However, a few obvious things to check:

Have you enabled your cookies?

Have you enabled javascript (aka ecmascript)?

Have you tried using another browser? I am using Firefox 3.5.5. and some version of IE (seven, I presume) and have none of those problems.

Have you tried clearing all your cookies?

Have your tried emptying your cache?

Have you tried logging in and - as soon as logged in - logging out? This ought to force a clean state.

The software version in use with the LUF is not the most recent one. There are more recent ones which appear to be much better. However, the upgrade from the current to a more recent one apparently raises some hairy database issues.

Thanks, guys, but everything is as prescribed. Cookies enabled, Java script running, cookies and memory cache regularly reset... etc... I mean, I do participate in many different forums, photograhy and motorccyle, some of them even look like they belong to the same family of design as the LUF, and they all work without a glitch. The only thing I didn't try is to use Firefox. I will, butt this is the latest version of Safari, the most widely used browser for the Mac, by far. Why would it be the culprit?

Hammam,

first of all, if you experience any problems, please send me a mail or a direct message.

I don't read all postings, so I stumbled upon your thread only by accident.

Regarding the log in issue:

- It's not your browser as I'm using the same setup without problems

- It's not the forum itself as most users use it without problems

My first guess is the Internet access you are using, for example:

- AOL was changing IPs in a strange way which caused problems

- Mobile access providers are using proxy servers heavily and are changing data (mostly images)

- Some companies use firewalls and proxies with some nasty collateral damage

Does one of these scenarios apply?

Another thing: Please try out...

- a different browser (Firefox, Camino)

- a different computer

- a different Internet access

... and check if the problems still occur.

Please send me more information over PM, I'm sure we get this fixed!

Best regards from Bonn

Andreas

I have the same problem. Exasperating. And it's not a cookie issue. I've cheked. My browser «always accepts cookies form sites I visit». This isMac OS 10.4 and Safari latest version. And the LUF never «remembers» me. I have to type in my name and password every time. And, yes, I do check the «remember me» box. Every time. I have these problems only on the LUF, not with other forums which appear to have the same kind of site design.

Strangely enough, this thread popped into my mind this evening.

Not being an Apple user, I wonder if the Safari browser offers the option to masquerade as another browser, such as IE or Firefox or - perhaps - even Opera.

Knowing how some web sites are programmed, I find it perfectly possible that this particular Version of the vBulletin forum software somwehow tries to apply different program parts to different browsers, and that the recognition for the Safari browser used by several members is flawed in some way.

Please understand that I have no reason to assume that things are that way. It's just one more thing which can be looked into.

Safari can pretend to be many different browsers

Not being pressed for time ATM, I did a Google search for "vbulletin safari login". That yielded several references to Keychains, whatever that might be.

There appears to be a series of problems with respect to the vBulletin software and Safari which can be solved by removing the credentials for the LUF from Safari's key chain.

Don't ask me. In this case, I don't really know what I'm talking about.

It's not Safari's KeyChain, it's an application in the Utilities folder, which keeps all your passwords etc safe.

If you open Keychain, find the relevant forum entry, and delete it, that _might_ solve the problem

To find the Utilities folder easily, when clicked on the Desktop, click the Go menu, then Utilities.
