CornerFix 1.3.0.0 is now available. Thanks to all those that contributed images, and tested an early version of this.

This version has several major improvements:

1. It provides correction for the decentering issues that result in the "red edges" as discussed in this post: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m9-forum/102760-18mm-m9.html, and also in this post: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m9-forum/101424-cv-15mm-versus-leica-18mm.html

2. CornerFix is now multi-threaded, so will be a lot faster on multi-core machines

Note that this version has MAJOR internal changes; expect bugs.

I've posted more information, and some images of what the new version can do here: ChromaSoft: Vignetting Correction Issues on the Leica M9 Part II

A note on compatibility: The new version will still load profiles from previous versions of CornerFix, right back to the first CornerFix ever released. However, in order to get decentering correction, you must be using a profile that was generated by CornerFix 1.3.0.0 or later - there is now additional information in the profile. Using a previous profile on the new version of CornerFix will work fine, but will have exactly the same result as previous versions of CornerFix.

The new version can be downloaded here: CornerFix | Get CornerFix at SourceForge.net

Enjoy

Umm, did I mention that bugs were likely??? :o

Well, Eric found the first one, which could result in an invalid profile being generated with certain option settings, on both Mac and Windows versions.

A revised version of CornerFix - V1.3.0.1 - is now available for download from the same place that fixes the problem.

Sandy- Again thank you! I've just downloaded the 1.3.0.1 version & will run some pics through it later today, and report back.

regards

Mike,

That would be very useful - the CV12 has been giving some users problems; the latest version of CornerFix can correct it fine, but the amount of vignetting seems to vary under different conditions in ways we don't quite understand yet.

For all fellow users of Sandy's excellent programme.

How are you generating the images to use for creating your CV12mm profiles in CornerFix?

In other words, what are you photographing with the CV12mm to use as a file for profile generation?

Because of its FOV i am having terrible problems trying to find a subject to photograph in normal outside daylight conditions that is of a suitable colour and size, at the moment i have been using a wall in our conservatory at home, however this may be causing problems with the profile generated and then used with images taken outside.

Sandy, I greatly appreciate your doing all this work - long before I can expect delivery of a camera body to make use of it!

I do, however, have a question: I understand this correction is necessary for extremely wide angle lenses, 12-18mm. But have similar problems & red left edges appeared when using more 'normal' lenses in the 28-50mm range?

Thx for your efforts, & for any info you can add.

Kirk, yes - I've seen issues on lenses up to 35mm. Although be aware different people have different sensitivity to color shifts - what bothers me might not be noticeable to most people.

On the 50s, the only one that's bothered me is the old f/1 nocti, which vignettes like crazy on the M9. Mostly normal vignetting as opposed to color drift, but it's over 4 stops down in the far corners, and if you correct the "normal" vignetting only, there is color drift as well.

You may remember I did a mock up of the M9 to look at the impact of mounting an FF "sensor" in an M8; I think the accuracy of my measurements was better than 0.5mm and I concluded that to avoid image clipping from the lens throat moulding, Leica was going to have to do one of three things - use a smaller battery, enlarge the casting to make space for the battery or move the lens mount across towards the shutter release end.

In the event, they did none of these things and the castings for the M9 are the same as the M8's. The moulding is fractionally different and the intrusion into the lens throat slightly reduced.

I'm wondering whether they also moved the sensor itself relative to the lens mount to avoid the clipping from the moulding so that the centre of the sensor is displaced horizontally from the optical centre of the lens/lens mount.

Could that explain the asymmetric colour effects you and others are seeing with the 18mm lens?

Sandy- Thanks once again for the latest update.

I will be posting some images later today with 12mm C/V & M9 using your even latest version. Just a question, what settings do you recommend on "preferences" in Cornerfix?
