sblutter Posted October 19, 2009 Share #1 Posted October 19, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've been an M person since I traded up from a IIIf in late 60's. 5DMkII is my 2nd FF, results continue to amaze. Use it in the studio. What I really need (not want) is a little street shooter for a new series. The frustration of no known delivery date coupled with the assumption Solms will substantially improve on the current model soured me. I don't need 2 bodies with similar characteristics. (I know, the lenses...) This morning I picked up the new Canon G11 and have been playing with it all day. Does what I need - results are more than acceptable, even at 3200 with a bit of work. I made a long sling type strap, I can barely feel it under a jacket - under 1 lb - at 1/14th the price. As you can see from this body of work, IQ is not critical to what I do: Steven Blutter I'll keep the Leitz lenses for the future, but the bodies are going on Ebay. If anyone wants one let me know - all kept in good shape by Sherry: 2 M3's (1 SS, 1 DS), 1 ea: 4, CL & 6 0.85 pre-TTL. It was a fun month of reading and anticipation until I realized now's not the time for me. For all of you that need the 9 - congrats and happy shooting!! PS: I'll be shooting in rougher areas - not being concerned with equipment value should be liberating.
Advertisement Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 Hi sblutter, Take a look here I'm out. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Shootist Posted October 19, 2009 Share #2 Posted October 19, 2009 Buy a good used M8. 1/3 the cost of the M9 and you can use your lenses.
Jager Posted October 19, 2009 Share #3 Posted October 19, 2009 Well of course Leicas are expensive. And if you don't need IQ there are a million point-and-shoot digicams out there that are tiny and cheap. And of course Solms will continue to improve their cameras. They'd be out of business if they didn't. Glad you found what you want. Life's too short to be frustrated and unhappy!
Guido Posted October 19, 2009 Share #4 Posted October 19, 2009 Still, a used G10 would have been an even better deal...
jbgeach Posted October 20, 2009 Share #5 Posted October 20, 2009 I hope you are happy, but I would check out the s90. It really is basically the same camera with better handling. Unfortunately, my recent Leica spree has run the bank account dry or I would take one of those film bodies off your hands
brill64 Posted October 20, 2009 Share #6 Posted October 20, 2009 well said and "out" for now but i hope not for too long...it's a very intelligent move for you to keep hold of the lenses if you feel annoyed and in need of a break. look after them, you do know them well as you mentioned and they will reward you again in the future. your work is beautiful, btw
zlatkob Posted October 20, 2009 Share #7 Posted October 20, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Enjoy the G11! I've had a lot of fun with the G10. I don't always like the everything in focus look of a small sensor camera, but on the other hand I appreciate that it's light and wearable and easy to take anywhere. Every current model by every manufacturer is likely to be improved (or replaced) at some point, so no need to be soured about that. The M9 was just introduced, so it's not likely to be substantially improved any time soon. The Canon G series get updated pretty often, but then it's not a big loss when it becomes "outdated". chris_tribble Posted October 20, 2009 Share #8 Posted October 20, 2009 PS: I'll be shooting in rougher areas - not being concerned with equipment value should be liberating. Steve - this I can relate to - and I'll also second comments on the work on your website - a lovely personal project. Great work. At the outset it's the person and the eye which make the images. The camera is just a box that does a job.
250swb Posted October 20, 2009 Share #9 Posted October 20, 2009 I can't think why you didn't buy the Panasonic GF1, you would have had better handling (inc. SLR type shutter lag and processing, not P&S slow type) and better IQ than the G11, AND you could have used your Leica lenses. Steve
Leicaiste Posted October 20, 2009 Share #10 Posted October 20, 2009 I can't think why you didn't buy the Panasonic GF1, you would have had better handling (inc. SLR type shutter lag and processing, not P&S slow type) and better IQ than the G11, AND you could have used your Leica lenses. Under a jacket, the G11 is more discreet that the GF1 with its zoom. And there is a (not perfect) viewfinder on the G11 instead of an optional (far from perfect) EVF. I agree on the IQ. But the G11 is a real competitor for the micro 4/3. sblutter Posted October 20, 2009 Author Share #11 Posted October 20, 2009 What a supportive group - thank you so much for your kind and understanding replies! (I was expecting to get slammed by gear heads) On the G11 - its a (consolation [no M9]) upgrade from the A650, I like the swing out and twirl display. Shooting from the waist ala an old twin lens 2 1/4 is great on the street. Will post this years work in a few weeks - all studio, here's a sample: http://www.sblutter.com/Photography/SSB%20Photo%20-%20all%20-%20edited/Emailable/sail%20away%20copy.jpg Thanks again - it was a tough decision, but shooting on a boulevard last night with a stealthy camera that passed my tests was a joy. Back on the street!

ChrisC Posted October 20, 2009 Share #13 Posted October 20, 2009 ..... rougher areas - not being concerned with equipment value should be liberating. Steven - I enjoyed the images, and think that if that's the direction you are likely to continue with the M9 would be a poor choice given it's real estate value. I think you made the right choice - even over a S/H M8 with Leica glass. .............. Chris
M. Valdemar Posted October 20, 2009 Share #14 Posted October 20, 2009 So what's the point of the announcement on the forum? Are you seeking validation for your decision? Or perhaps you would like an engraved, framed congratulatory certificate? "He is out. Goodbye and Good Luck. He has dumped a camera."
stevem7 Posted October 20, 2009 Share #15 Posted October 20, 2009 Great work on your site, and I am sure that the G11 will do great for you after viewing your images. The M9 is a great camera, and expensive, but not really "needed" by many people, myself included. I must say though, I love it to death. Keep up with the great work. Olsen Posted October 20, 2009 Share #16 Posted October 20, 2009 Steven, Besides my M8 gear, I am using a Canon 1Ds III and find that I get far more keepers with the latter. That said, I find the compactness of the M8 just excellent. Right now I am considering what to do further down the line. Soon a 1Ds IV will be launched. Then I might have to choose which to upgrade and which camera system to keep for the future. Four years ago I went straight along and bought the M8, but the M9 is just over the top price wise. - My salary is paid in Norwegian Kroners, Europe's strongest currency right now, so any exchange rate is not the problem. For the moment I am keeping my M8 and small collection of M-lenses. On average, my 1Ds III produces more keepers, but the M8 produces some stunning results some times and is far more compact and discrete. Still: My M9 purchase is on hold, right now. jonoslack Posted October 20, 2009 Share #19 Posted October 20, 2009 I really want to try out the GF1 as a little companion to my M gear. Hi there I bought one recently, rather on a whim. the cheap zoom is startlingly good (and the 20 f1.7 looks better). Sometimes it's good to have more DOF, and 4/3 seems to me to be a good balance between sensor size and dof. Added to which the GF1 simply makes you smile - fun and functional. Certainly no substitute, but certainly a little companion.
