I am not going to cry in advance, but I am skeptical of this move. In cameras I have seen *so far*, the CCD sensors have had nicer colours and a depth that I miss in CMOS-based cameras. I hope that this is not sensor-type-related, but just a side-effect of other choices, but I would want to see it to believe it.

The color filters and AA filter doesn't depend on sensor type... Full frame transfer CCDs are relatively simple devices, passive light catchers. So all FFT CCDs are very similar. CMOS are active devices. There are simple designs and very complex ones. Differences among CMOS units may be quite large. Leica cannot find a cooperative manufacturer like Kodak able to design and produce first class CMOS sensors. But Leica is looking for it... sure, or they ought be doing it.

I've also heard from the Leica lady at the S2 day in Toronto claiming that they'll probably adopt a CMOS sensor for the S2 successor, those who believe that CCD is the holy grail of everything could get ready to cry now ... I can provide some handkerchiefs. :p

This is all a very normal technical evolution. CMOS has lot of advantages and some disadvantages compared to CCD. If these disadvantages can be handled, then CMOS has per definition more potential than CCD.

Big question is, when the time is there to do the move ....

I also assume that we will then see CMOS MFDBs from Phase and Hasselblad as well, as then time has come to introduce this technology in MFDB. And maybe this will then be the real change in terms of high sensitivity and high ISO photography also in MF - like the Nikon D3 brought 2 years ago in DSLR.

Pentax will be (hopefully) the only japanese manufacturer of MF systems next year. Japanese companies may have easier access to some technologies, components and patents. If they don't use a CMOS, then it is not easy to do, whatever the reason.

Canon does the 24x36mm CMOS sensors by merging two smaller parts. The largest sensor piece they can manufacture is something like APS-H size. So a MF sensor can be done adding more parts...

Lets see.

Sony first, and then Toshiba, are manufacturing back-illuminated CMOS sensors:

Toshiba develops back-illuminated sensor: Digital Photography Review

CMOS are converging to what CCDs mean (high fill factor), and CCDs will be converging to what CMOS mean (more noise control built into the chip).

... and Samsung...

  • 4 weeks later...
The US dollar is steadily collapsing in value...

Most have complained about the high cost of the S2 in terms of USD. However, the value of the dollar is not remaining static since the public announcement of S2 pricing. Leica may find that the original pricing of the S2 is actually too low to cover the loss in purchasing power of the dollar.

A lot of bad things can happen to the dollar between now and January.

sorry to quote myself, but Leica Rumors is reporting that all Leica products will increase in price by 8-15% in the US starting Jan. 2010

This is correct.....but, only M lenses, D-Lux, and many accessories are going up in price. The M9, X1, S2, and S lenses are not going up in price.

I believe I posted this to the forum several weeks ago.

Dave, is that why M lenses are almost unobtainable in the US now? Do you have a new 90mm Summicron you could sell me?

M lenses are becoming unavailable now for the same reason they did when the M8 came out - huge increase in demand without a huge increase in supply. There was a 6-12 month backlog for lenses after the M8 came out. I expect a similar situation (or worse) with the M9.

As far as a 90 APO goes, it is one of the two lenses I don't have in stock right now (out of 22). The other is the 50 Lux ASPH. We have large numbers of both of these lenses on order with Leica, but deliveries have been small and slow.
