mwilliamsphotography Posted November 30, 2006 Share #221 Posted November 30, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) " Most of it has been trying to match Velvia or Kodachrome, not negative film." That's probably true. Clarification like that goes a long way toward understanding the criteria. I rarely shoot slide film, so my criteria is neg film which is a whole other visual aspect. More specifically, in my case, B&W negative film as well as some 400 speed color neg films. This is the look I like, and that I feel is different than digital. Personally, If I wanted something like Velvia or Kodachrome, I'd just shoot digital.

bill_green Posted December 1, 2006 Share #224 Posted December 1, 2006 Those pictures are crap. If you had shot them on film it would have been a work of art. If you add some grain it might be salvagable. That may be the first real accurate sky blue I have seen from a digital camera. I know you have been trying not to jump to conclusions, but the M8 is better than the DMR, sensor and lenses. IR problems or not.
Guest guy_mancuso Posted December 1, 2006 Share #225 Posted December 1, 2006 , but the M8 is better than the DMR, sensor and lenses. IR problems or not. Damn Bill you have me at a cross roads. i simple have not seen this kind of detail in the DMR. Im ...........floored
Guest guy_mancuso Posted December 1, 2006 Share #226 Posted December 1, 2006 I had the filter on the 24mm and in C1 cut the Kelvin 700 degrees from 5600 to 4900. Been doing that lately with both c1 and raw developer. Seems to give me a better starting spot. Bill i am also at 6400 feet and no air polution stuff to deal with which probably helps the blue. i just sold my polarizer , who needs one here
ddp Posted December 1, 2006 Share #227 Posted December 1, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Guy - that's a pretty impressive blue there. The M lenses are considered to be better than the R line in most cases - and for you R users, I know there are reference lenses in the lineup 180 Summicron, 100 2.8 macro, 280 APO. It was looking at chromes shot with both systems that had me sell off the R gear. The sky in these looks more realistic than what I have seen out of other digitals. I am real curious to see some of your commercial stuff Guy when you start using the M8 for the shots with people, etc.
Guest guy_mancuso Posted December 1, 2006 Share #228 Posted December 1, 2006 Dan i am really curious about that too with the full lighting package and the colored gels and such. This thing is singing, I agree the 180 , 280 , 100 macro are some of the best there is in the R but these M lenses are something else. i knew they were better but not by this amount. I'm floored no kidding. Just think when we start getting the colors correct on the M8 . Stuff like this makes me want a second one

cpclee Posted December 1, 2006 Share #232 Posted December 1, 2006 I had both the R and M systems and shot them side by side frequently. The M ASPH wides were a notch better than the equivalent R primes but there would otherwise be no consistent difference. I don't see how one could draw conclusions about an entire lens lineup based on images taken using different sensors and software. The M8 is supposed to represent 2 years of progress since the DMR! Guest guy_mancuso Posted December 1, 2006 Share #233 Posted December 1, 2006 I know and I love my DMR needless to say but I do see some differences also and yes the M8 is 2 years newer. Still my opinion is these are the 2 best image makers out there in this format and just happy i am shooting them both. Off to shoot a all day golf tourny with both. ddp Posted December 1, 2006 Share #234 Posted December 1, 2006 I Off to shoot a all day golf tourny with both. LOL Guy, if you're shooting foursomes today - would it be possible to post one or two images? I know it may be a client issue, etc - but I'd be interested to see how skin tones / greens and sky hold up with the Leica glass.
